Obituaries for Week of June 16

KIMBERLY S. CHANEY
Kimberly S. Chaney, 55, of Hurricane, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 after a long illness. She attended Ethel Baptist Church in Sweetland and always had a smile for everyone.
She was preceded in death by her father Donald F. Chaney and brother Gregory D. Chaney.
She is survived by her mother Barbara Nichols Chaney and nephew Colby Chaney and 2 great nieces and one great nephew and other extended family.
Funeral service was Friday, June 10, 2022 at Allen Funeral Home with her uncle Arthur Chaney officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

KEVIN CHAPMAN
Kevin Dale Chapman, 51, of Hurricane, went home to be with the Lord on June 11, 2022 after a short illness. Kevin was the manager at McDonalds of Hurricane and a lifelong resident of the area.
Kevin was preceded in death by his father Jacob Leo Chapman and brother Phillip.
He is survived by his mother Eleanor Ratliff Chapman. Brothers, Jacob Leo Chapman Jr. , James Chapman, Christopher Chapman, and Matthew Chapman all of Hurricane; Sisters, Diana Torman of St. Albans, Connie Boggess of Milton, Kathy Ketchem of SC., Peggy Davis of Culloden, Terry Schardon of Ohio, Sherry Bradford of Ohio and Vicki Marion of SC.
Burial will be at Chapman Cemetery on Trace Creek.

BRENDA C. GRITT
Brenda C. Gritt, 71, of Leon, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2022 at her home. She was a 1969 graduate of South Charleston High School and attended Maranatha Fellowship in St. Albans. She was a former employee of Walmart in Ripley with 12 years of service.
She was the daughter of the late Gene and Wilma Clevenger. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her cousin, Cora Sue Cooley.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Don Gritt; daughters Laura Jividen of Elkview and Elizabeth Preece of St. Albans; son, Joseph (Kim) Gritt of Pt. Pleasant; grandchildren, K.C. Nease, Christie Jividen, C.J. Jividen, Cheyenne Sturgeon, Nick Nicholson, Lauren Gritt, Madison Gritt and Courtney Holmes; 12 great grandchildren. Brenda is also survived by her cousins that she considered her sister and brother, Patty Reed and “Sonny” Clevenger.
Funeral service was Tuesday June 14th, 2022 at Raynes Funeral Home, Eleanor, with Pastor Randy Stanley officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

ELIZABETH ‘BETSY’ HENSON
Elizabeth Anne “Betsy” Powell Henson of Hurricane, passed away June 6, 2022.
She was born in Morgantown, WV to E.G. “George” and Golda Powell on January 5, 1949.
Betsy is survived by her son, Richard Kasel and her long-time companion, Pete Johnson. Also surviving are her brother, H.E. “Skip” Powell (Ida) of Barboursville, WV and sister, Nancy Powell Haines (Rodney) of Austin, Texas. In addition, nieces and nephews: John Powell (Nicole), Beth Ann Dudley (David), James Powell (deceased), David Powell, Russell Haines (Mary), and Amy Monkman (Jay) and their families.
Celebration of Life service was Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at the Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Barboursville.

MELODY A. MACK
Melody A. Mack, 62, of Red House, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2022 at the Cleveland Clinic. She was a 1977 graduate of Poca High School and a member of Lone Oak Church of God Mission. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Roberta Casto and her sister, Melinda Arthur.
Survivors include her loving husband of 42 years, Chris Mack; father and step mother, Bill and Reba Casto of Red House; daughters, Lisa (Ben) Harrison of Red House and Amy (Tony) Crago of Paradise; brother, Trent Casto of Red House; sister, Brett Robinson of Red House; brother-in-law, Greg Arthur of Scott Depot; grandchildren, Karlie, Drew, Skylar, Raegen and Logan. Melody is also survived by several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Funeral service was Thursday June 16, 2022 at Raynes Funeral Home, Eleanor, with Pastor Scott Casto officiating. Burial was in Center Point Cemetery, Liberty.

MICHAEL MADDOX
Michael Maddox, 57, of Culloden, passed away June 9, 2022, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Michael was preceded in death by his mother Patricia “Pam” Maddox.
He is survived by his father: Jim Maddox of Kenova; wife of 28 years: Legh Ann; children: Dakota Maddox, James Chase Maddox, Carter Maddox and Grayson Maddox; brothers: Greg Maddox (Libby) of Ashland, KY; Jeff Maddox (Brenda) of Kenova; Mark Maddox of Hurricane; Scott Maddox (Chaundra) of Huntington; In-laws Gary and Judy Deal of Hernshaw; brother-in-law John Snodgrass (Lori), Lisa Darby, Nikki Adkins (Terrance) many nieces, nephews, great nieces as well as great nephews.
A Celebration of Michael’s Life will be 4:00pm, Saturday, June 18th at Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene, Hurricane.

ERNEST ‘ERNIE’ RHODES
Ernest “Ernie” Rhodes, 78, of Hurricane, passed away on June 11, 2022 surrounded by his loving family, following a long illness.
He was born September 26, 1943, a son of the late Ernest Kenna Rhodes and Myrtle Gay Rhodes. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Croson and Helen Pack.
Ernest was an Air Force Veteran and owner and president of Rhodes Brick and Block Co. He enjoyed traveling, farming, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
Ernest is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Anita F. Rhodes of Hurricane; sons, Rick (Sherry) Rhodes and Greg Rhodes; grandchildren, Chris Rhodes, Jason Rhodes, Bryce Rhodes, Brooke Rhodes, Brenna Rhodes and Bristol Rhodes; and his very special “Little Man”, great grandson, Joseph Rhodes; brother, Estel (Sally) Rhodes; sister, Ella Mae (John) Garner; and many other extended family and friends.
Graveside service was Thursday, June 16, 2022 at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House, with Pastor Robert “Bob” Morris officiating.

DONNA L. SHORT
Donna Louise Short 75, of Scott Depot, entered her Heavenly Home on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at home surrounded by her family.
She was born on September 20, 1946, a daughter of the late Kenneth and Erma Kinder Samms. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Johnny Samms and George Samms.
Donna is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Gary E. Short. She was a loving mother to five wonderful sons, Kenneth (Missy) of Frazier’s Bottom, Stevie (Shelley) of Winfield, Gary (Jennifer) of Winfield, Randy (Angel) of Eleanor, Billy (Kelli) of Clearwater, Fla., 14 wonderful grandchildren and 7 beautiful great grandchildren. Donna is also survived by siblings, William Samms, Deborah Faulkner and Anna Short.
To Donna, family was everything, she loved the Lord and her family. Her life revolved around her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Donna was a member of North Charleston Baptist Church for 52 years while serving as the church secretary for 33 years. Donna leaves a legacy of love and compassion that has touched all of us.
Funeral Services and a Celebration of her Life were held, Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at North Charleston Baptist Church with Senior Pastor Dave Carney, Pastors John Jicka and Matt Shamblin officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

ARCHIE SKILES
Archie Dale Skiles, 96, of Scott Depot, passed away on June 6, 2022.
Archie was born June 20, 1925 to the late Issac and Emma Skiles. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Ruby Skiles; son, Stephen Skiles; all 7 of his siblings; and his mother in law, Mary Clay.
Archie retired from Amherst Industries and was a faithful member of Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene.
Archie was survived by his daughter, Beverly Crede of Scott Depot; granddaughter, Kristen Crede Wells (Christian) of Winfield, and her father, Gary Crede; two great grandchildren, Emerson and Case; and many church family and friends.
A Memorial Service for Archie was held Sunday, June 12, 2022 at Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene in Hurricane, with Rev. Charles V. Williams officiating.

CHARLENE KAREN WYMER
Charlene Karen Shamblin Wymer, of Scott Depot, passed away on June 10, 2022 at home with her family.
She was born on March 15, 1951 to the late Hansford and Helen D. Wolford Shamblin of Liberty.
Karen was a 1969 graduate of Poca High School and was a retired secretary from Columbia Gas.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Casey Wymer; and brothers: Fred, Leroy, Danny, and Roger Shamblin.
Karen is survived by her loving family, husband, Ron Wymer; son, Brandon and Jintana Wymer, grandchildren: Kyler Wymer, Grady Hicks, Hunter Wymer, Mika Wymer, and Atticus Wymer; great grandson: Elijah Hicks; sisters: Doris Romjue, Janet Gore (Jim), Debbie Custer (Bobby) and her brother: Charles Shamblin (Gloria) and Chester Shamblin (Mary Lou).
A Memorial Service for Karen was Thursday, June 16, 2022 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane.
