September 9, 2022, was a big day in Hurricane. The football field at Redskin Stadium at Hurricane High School was officially named Jim McGehee Field and the Redskins defeated the George Washington Patriots by a 56-7 margin.
The field was named in honor of Jim McGehee who was in attendance. McGehee was born in 1939 and grew up in Hurricane and attended Hurricane Elementary, Junior High and High School where he participated in football, cross country and track.
After receiving a degree from Morehead State, he embarked upon a teaching and coaching career at Hurricane Junior High and Hurricane High. Later, he moved into administration and served Putnam Schools as a principal, Director of Personnel, and Superintendent of Schools.
McGehee was also an associate pastor at Hurricane First Baptist Church where he presided over many weddings and funerals.
