In 1988, The Centennial History of Hurricane, WV was published to commemorate the town’s 100th anniversary. In 1994, the Centennial Committee published a follow up book which included family histories which were not submitted in time for the 1988 Centennial History. This week’s selection is the 13th history from The Centennial History of Hurricane WV Continued — 1994.

DAVID HARBOUR SR.

David Harbour Sr. and Elizabeth Berry Harbour came to Teays Valley about 1806. He was born 1765 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the son of Elijah and Prudence Pusey Harbour. David and his first wife, Mary Spurlock Harbour, had four children. Mary died while traveling through Kentucky. In Bourbon County, Kentucky, on the 26th of February, 1803, David married Elizabeth Berry Bell, a widow, the daughter of Basil Berry Sr. Elizabeth died about 1830 in Cabell County.

Elizabeth’s daughter, Mary Bell, came with the Harbours to Virginia. She married John Smallridge on the 25th of January, 1820, in Cabell County. They raised a large family in the Teays Valley area. David Sr. and Elizabeth had three children.

  1. Jess Harbour was born 1804 in Kentucky. He died after 1880. On the 10th of January, 1828, he married Jane Newman, the daughter of Leroy and Sally Jordan Newman. Jane died in 1836. Their three children: Elizabeth, Martha, who married Samuel Lafayette Billups on the 1st of November, 1849; Montaque, who married Lelia Johnson. Montaque died while in the Civil War and is buried at Union Memorial Cemetery in Milton. He and Lelia had two sons, Jesse and Charles. Both sons raised large families in the Milton area.
  2. Sarah Harbour born 1808 in Virginia married on the 25th day of December, 1827, Russell Newman, son of Leroy and Sally Jordan Newman. Sarah died about 1848 leaving ten children at home.
  3. David Harbour Jr. born 1809, died 1849, married Elizabeth McCallister, born 1812, died 1869, the daughter of Col. Thomas McCallister, 1783-1843, and Mary Nichols McCallister, 1788-1858. (All of the just mentioned are buried and have monuments at the McCallister cemetery on Route 60, Putnam County (very near the Cabell County line). David Jr. and Elizabeth had seven children:

John T. Harbour, 1831-1881, married Adaliza Roberts, 1833-1903.

James Peru Harbour, 1834-1860, married America Loutitia Smoot.

Mary Etta Harbour, 1836-1860, married Charles Mays.

Edna J. Harbour, 1838-1888, married Robert Martin.

Elizabeth Harbour, 1841-187?, married Elias Wheeler.

Thomas Marion Harbour, 1843-1926, married Vaturia Conner, 1851-1935.

Charles Edgar Harbour, 1848-1914, married Clarise Kate Kirtley.

All seven couples raised their families in the Teays Valley area.

David Harbour Sr. was a Baptist Preacher. He performed the marriages of his own children as well as his stepdaughter, Mary Bell. Many other marriages are on record in Cabell and Kanawha Counties. He died at the home of his son, Jess, on Mud River Road.
