Obituaries for Week of October 27

ROY LEE BESS
Roy Lee Bess, 87, of Poca, passed away October 21, 2022, in Hillcrest Healthcare Center.
Roy was a retired laborer. He is a Marine Corp Veteran and a member of the American Legion and the Church of God of Prophecy.
He is preceded in death by his parents Delbert and Letha Bess and his siblings Dencil, Shay, Juanita, Bucky, Dotsie, Ruth, and Bill.
Roy is survived by his son Larry Arthur; brother Glenville Bess and sister Dobbie Proctor. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
A tribute to the life of Mr. Roy L. Bess will be 2:00 PM Saturday, October 29, 2022, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Darlene McKnight officiating. Entombment will follow in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens, Red House. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

CAROL MARTIN
Carol Ann Hicks Martin, 71, of Nitro, went home to be with the Lord on October 23, 2022, at home.
Carol is retired Librarian from Kanawha County Schools and a graduate of Glenville State College. She attended Rock Branch Independent Church and was in love with her Savior. Carol loved to read and write commentaries explaining the scripture found in God’s word.
She is preceded in death by her husband Dana Martin and parents Silas and Vera Hicks.
She is survived by her two children Kara Yeates and her husband Tyson and Christopher Martin; brother Ronald Hicks; two nephews Zach Meador and Mike Bousquet and four grandchildren Jaxton, Makell, Ryker, and Alex.
Carol was loved by all, and the family would like to thank everyone that showed love to Carol during these last few months. As Carol would say “Love you, Night-Sickle”.
A tribute to the life of Mrs. Carol Ann Hicks Martin was held Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at Rock Branch Independent Church with Pastor Delbert Hawley and Chad Harding officiating. Burial was in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington.

JOANN SANDERS
Joann Sanders, 86, of St. Albans, went home to be with the Lord October 18, 2022.
Joann is retired from Thomas Memorial Hospital. After retirement she worked for Arby’s in Southridge. She is a member of Lett Creek Community Church and enjoyed crocheting and working cross word puzzles.
She is preceded in death by her son William Collins.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Mr. John Sanders; sister Virginia Corns of Huntington; two grandchildren Retha and husband Jarrett Philpott and William Collins and three great grandchildren Adriana, Brantley, and Gannon.
A tribute to the life of Joann was held Friday October 21, 2022 at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor David Bailey officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens, Red House.

HOWARD H. PAINTER
Howard H. Painter, 82, of Hurricane, passed away on October 15, 2022, after an extended illness. Mr. Painter was born on October 26, 1939 in Elkins to Frank W. Painter and Florence G. Hilborn Painter. Howard was a 1957 graduate of Elkins High School. He went on to attend WV Business College and received his degree in Business Management and Advanced Accounting.
Howard’s career with the State of West Virginia began in 1963 working with the Department of Corrections at the Huttonsville Correctional Center. He later worked in the WV Legislative Auditors Office. He left the Auditors Office and went to work for Elkins Limestone Company as the Fiscal Manager.
His love for the correctional field took him back to work for the WV Department of Corrections in 1976 until his retirement. Howard worked in different roles and facilities for the remainder of his career. He retired in August 2001 as the Warden at the Mount Olive Correctional Center in Smithers, West Virginia after 30+ years of service.
After his retirement, Howard opened his own private investigation business Painter and Associates, LLC. Which he still maintained until the time of his death.
Mr. Painter was twice married, in November 1963 he married the former Patricia A. Daniels who preceded him in death on December 31, 1983.
On December 25, 1988, he married the former Debra C. Epperly Painter who survives in Hurricane.
Mr. Painter was preceded in death by his mother and father Florence G. and Frank W. Painter, his stepmother Lorena A. Hilborn Painter, his brother Frank W. Painter Jr., his sister Aileen R. Painter Burner and his grandson Michael J. McCartney.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Kimberly K. Painter Chamberlain, his granddaughter Misty N. Chamberlain, his great granddaughter Brooklyn K. Chamberlain and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, October 28,2022 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane. The funeral will be held Sunday, October 30th, 2022 at the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, 450 Randolph Avenue, Elkins, WV at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be at the Beverly Cemetery, Beverly.

DENISE MARIE WINTER
Denise Marie Winter, 69, of Poca, passed away October 21, 2022, surrounded by her family at home, while listening to Elvis.
Denise is a retired custodian from Putnam County Schools with over 20 years of service. She loved attending Poca football and basketball games and sitting on her porch waiting on her family to arrive home and wave at the neighbors passing by. She loved her family, especially spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed riding her golf cart throughout the subdivision.
She is preceded in death by her daughter Shelia Winter; parents Bill and Arlene Lett; father and mother-in-law Curtis and Gay Winter; sister Linda Hawley and her husband Booger; sister-in-law Janet Winter; brother Rusty Lett, brothers-in-law Michael Winter, and Rick Winter; niece Kim Cantley and her dogs Gracie and Bingo.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 52 years, David Winter; son Stacy Winter and his wife Wendy; four grandchildren Cody, Courtney and her fiancé Casey Coleman, Georgia and her husband Jeremy, and Brett; five great grandchildren Aiyden, Levi, Wesley, Bohannon, and Raelynn; brothers-in-law Curtis Winter and Arnold Winter and his wife Ann; sisters-in-law Wink Fontalbert and her husband Hoyt, Patty Winter and Linda Winter; niece Teresa and her husband Mike Hunt and a host of other family and friends.
Denise donated her body to Marshall University and at her request there will be no services.

BELMA WITHROW
Belma “Nanny” Leadmon Withrow, 90, of Hurricane, went to her Heavenly Home on Friday, October 21, 2022 surrounded by her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend O. Russell Withrow; infant son, Rodney Russell; parents: Paul Ross and Arizona Chapman Leadmon; sister, Peggy Gibson; brothers: Paul Leadmon and Charles Leadman Sr.
Belma was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Hurricane Creek Road. She loved the Lord and served him faithfully. She enjoyed supporting her grandchildren in football, baseball, band, show choir and was known to their friends as “Nanny Belma”. She was a 1950 graduate of Hurricane High School, worked at C&P Telephone Company and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Belma will be greatly missed by her family.
She is survived by a brother: Donald (Connie) Leadmon; children: Kathi (Gary) Amick, Donna (Bruce) Stowers, Rusty (Robin) Withrow, and Denise (Mark) Edwards; grandchildren: Aaron (Tara) Amick, Joshua Stowers, Jonathan Stowers, Todd Amick, Kalynn (Tony) Willey, Jordan Stowers, Cherish (Jake) Shiflett, Russell Withrow, Tyson Edwards, and Raven (Huntley) Schoen; great grandchildren: Tessa and Brenna Amick, Carter Stowers, Berklee and Rawlings Shiflett, and Sawyer and Breelyn Willey; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral Service for Belma was Monday, October 24, 2022 at Bethel Baptist Church, Hurricane Creek Rd., Hurricane, with Rev. Mark Kilburn and Pastor Todd Godby officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
