ROSALEE BROWN
Rosalee Brown, 73, of Poca, passed away November 28, 2022.
She is preceded in death by her daughters Kimberly Bowers and Lisa Kessell; parents Walter and Sylvia Harper and brother Ronald Harper.
Rosalee is survived by her sisters Ruth McCoy, Doris Thomas, Arlene Gay, Nancy Rollyson, and Beverly Adkison; brothers Roy Harper, Bill Harper, Donald Harper and Danny Harper; grandsons Chris Kessell, Tony Kessell and Joseph Kessell; great grandchildren William Kessell, Levi Kessell and Mackenzie Saunders and granddaughter-in-law Danielle Kessell.
A tribute to the life of Rosalee was Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel.

GERTRUDE CAIN
Evangelene “Gertrude” Cain, 96, of Red House, passed away Sunday, November 20, 2022 at her home. She was a member of Wade Chapel U.M. Church and loved all her church family dearly. She loved to quilt, garden and was an excellent cook.
She was the daughter of the late Ami Coulter and Eva Hupp Coulter. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Dencil W. Cain; granddaughter, Candace Harrison; great granddaughter, Meghan Painter; sisters, Estella Perkins, Garnet Smith, Mary Goddard and Bessie Luikart; brothers, Calvin Coulter and Lee Coulter.
Survivors include her daughter, Kathie (“Bucky”) Brown; sons, Jerry W. Cain, Richard Cain and Terry “Deno” Cain all of Red House; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.
Funeral service was Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at Raynes Funeral Home, Eleanor, with Pastor Mike Miller officiating. Burial was in Shiloah Cemetery, Red House.

BARBARA JEAN CHASE
Barbara Jean Chase (Hess), 82, of Scott Depot, passed away after a short illness on November 25, 2022, at home surrounded by her family.
She was the daughter of the late Oran D. and Virginia Pearl Wilson. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Robert C. Chase; brother, Larry Wilson and daughter-in-law Penny Nicholls (Chase).
Born in St. Marys, Barbara graduated from St. Marys High School and went on to take classes toward a nursing degree at Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi where she met and married Bob Chase of Exeter, NH. She raised their two sons in Cross Lanes where they attended Perrow Church. After Bob’s passing in 1983, Barbara began working in Cross Lanes as a nurse for Drs. Paul “Dick” Santrock and Greg Stonestreet until she retired in 2004. She met and married Ron Hess in 2016 and together they enjoyed church, travel and family. Barbara’s love of the Lord was well known by all. She lived life longing for heaven and is now with her Savior.
Barbara is survived by her loving husband Ronald Lee Hess; two sons: Brien Chase (Ruthie) of Charleston and Trent Chase (Wendy) of Colorado Springs, CO; 4 grandchildren: Katherine Chase, Madison Chase McCreary (Al), Cameron Chase and McKinsey Chase; sister-in-law, Rita Wilson; and many other extended family and friends.
A memorial service was held at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Teays Valley on Wednesday, November 30.

DANIEL CUMMINGS
Daniel Lee Cummings, 76, of Midway, passed away Monday, November 21, 2022 at Cabell Hospital following a short illness.
He was a loving husband and father. Dan was a proud U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran. He worked and mastered many professions but his favorite job was playing Santa Clause for several years. He loved to see children smile and was very proud of his natural white hair and beard that gave him the realistic Santa Clause look. Dan was an active participant in Amateur Ham Radio. He loved to travel to conventions to learn about new electronics and technology innovations. Spending time with his family and working with new devices made him the happiest in life.
Born July 3, 1946 in Charleston, he was the son of the late Hibbert Cummings and Erma Harper Cummings.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Cummings; son, Dathum (Lora) Cummings and granddaughter, Danielle.
Service for Dan was private. Interment was in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens, Red House.

JERRY FIDLER
Jerry Wayne Fidler, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend – passed away at home in Hurricane on November 25, 2022.
Jerry was born to Avon and Nellie Fidler in Washington, PA. He graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, FL. He had a great 20+ year career at Service Wire in Culloden. He was preceded in death by his wife Deborah Ann Fidler and survived by four children, Jerry Fidler Jr, Jason Fidler, Tracy Fowler, Dawn Tomer, 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, sister Nancy Lile, 2 sister-in-laws Brenda Johnson, and Grace Mitchell.
Jerry was dedicated, loving, and very much a servant leader. He enjoyed fishing and loved spending time with his family. A private memorial service will be held.

LORAINE FISHER
Loraine Lee Fisher, 56 of Nitro passed away November 19, 2022.
Loraine loved spending time with her family and playing cornhole.
She is preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Velva Fisher and sister Brenda Cochran.
She is survived by her siblings Irene Spurlock of Nitro, Robert Fisher of Winfield, Bill Fisher of Winfield, Mary Stafford of Nitro, Ronald Fisher of Eleanor, Betty (Eddie) Smith of Letart, and Loretta Garrison of Huntington; two great nephews Kenneth and Dakota McGee and a host of nieces and nephews.
A tribute to the life of Loraine was held Friday, November 25, 2022 at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Steve Berkhouse officiating. Burial was in the Warner-Thornton Cemetery, Leon.

BILLY RAY GIBSON
Billy Ray Gibson, 79, of Hurricane, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2022.
Billy was retired from Greif Brothers as an assembly line worker. He loved his family.
He was born January 13, 1943, in Hurricane, to the late Lillard and Reba Gibson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Gay Gibson; and siblings, Paula Roach, Donnie Childers and Chuck Gibson.
He is survived by his children, Billy Scott Gibson (Rachael) of Hurricane, Kip Gibson of Hurricane and Matt Gibson of Hurricane; brother, Dave Gibson of Scott Depot; grandchildren, Destiny Gibson, Alee Gibson, Todd Gibson, Dennis Ray Gibson, Chelsey Rae Gibson and Marlene Rae Gibson; and many other extended family and friends.
Funeral service was Friday, November 25, 2022 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Pastor James Dennis officiating. Burial was in Lower Hodges Cemetery, Hurricane.

ERIC McCLURE
Eric Mcclure, 76, of Hurricane, went home to be with the Lord Monday, November 21, 2022 at home. He was born April 13, 1946, in Fairmont, son of the late Ruth (Slusser) and Donald McClure. He was preceded in death by his son Eric Kevin McClure, along with one sister, Donna Venarius. Eric was a US Air Force veteran and a 21-year member of the WV 249th National Guard Band. He was a Salvation Army officer for seven years. He was retired from the Kanawha County Board of Education and a member of The Salvation Army Church.
Survivors include his loving, caring and devoted wife, Annette McClure; three children, Sean (Ashley) McClure of South Charleston, Erin (Willard) Ferrell of Fairmont, and Michelle McClure of St Albans; seven grandchildren, Audrey, Claire and Max McClure, Hannah (Isaac) McCoy, Jess (Angela) Ferrell, Justin (Katie) McClure and Joshua Foster; five great grandchildren, Emma Grace, Tanner, Ivy, Hal and Ryder; as well as three step-children, Joe (Dianna) Eary of Ridgeley John (Debbie) Eary of Cross Lanes, and James (Christina) Eary of Westerville, OH, and their families.
Also surviving are three brothers, Bill (Melody) McClure of Louisville, KY, John (Linda) McClure of Carlisle, PA and Donald McClure of Hudson, NC; one sister, Linda (Tony) Bufalino of Corapeake, NC; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
Eric generously donated his body to the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine for the advancement of science and education.
Eric brought joy to so many people with his beautiful playing of his trumpet and cornet. He loved his family and friends very much and enjoyed spending time with them. He would do anything to help someone in need.
A Memorial service will be held Friday, December 2, 2022, at 11 a.m., at The Salvation Army, 301 Mary Street (corner of Bigley Ave), Charleston. Military Honors will take place at Sunset Memorial Park in South Charleston.

FLOYD ‘LLOYD’ RICE
Floyd “Lloyd” Rice, 85, of Griffithsville, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 21, 2022 after a short illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Lennie Rice, son, Russell, siblings, Wilma, Donnie Lee, and Lewis, and one granddaughter.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Rice; children, Wanda (Clifford) Hanshaw, William “Bill” (Arzella) Rice, Brenda (Earl) Sovine, Jeff Rice, Alice (Manny Franco) Rice, Luther “Bub” Rice, Kyle (Mischele) Rice, Eddie (Beth) Rice, and Steve (Laura) Rice; 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, one great great grandson; siblings, Wade, Dale, Johnnie, Lorena “Sis”.
Funeral service was Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at Allen Funeral Home with Pastor Lafe Meade officiating, Burial was in Sycamore Cemetery.

DOUGLAS SAPP
Douglas Bruce Sapp, 71, of Hurricane, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2022, while at Hubbard Hospice House West in South Charleston while with his loving wife of 51 years Connie Sapp by his side.
Doug was born in New Martinsville on July 11, 1951. He was the son of the late Victor and Lizzy (Powell) Sapp. He was also preceded in death by two sisters-in-law Connie (Gary) Sapp and Karen (Chuck) Sapp.
He held many positions at PPG Industries, was an Army Veteran of 23 years and a member of the Putnam Lodge 139, AF&AM, Hurricane. He loved playing his guitar and banjo for family and friends. He was a Christian by faith as he was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Sistersville.
Surviving is his loving wife of 51 years Connie Sapp, son Eric (Patty) Sapp of Lexington SC, daughters Kristina (Ron) Heasley of Paden City and Alisa Sapp of Hurricane; five grandchildren: Eric (Aubrey) Sapp of Forest Acres SC; Amanda (Nate) Maleski of St. Clairsville OH; Zach, Aaron, and Katrina Heasley of Paden City; three great grandchildren Gwendolyn and Raegan Sapp, and Bryson Maleski. Eight Siblings: William (Helena) Sapp, Gary (Rose) Sapp, James (Lynn) Sapp, Sue (Dan) Anderson, Rick (Penny) Sapp, Nancy (Tim) Raper, Chuck Sapp, and Tony (Nancy) Sapp. Along with numerous Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins.
A graveside Masonic service was held at Paden Memorial Gardens in Paden City on Saturday, November 26, 2022.

JEFFREY SOWARDS
Jeffrey Alan Sowards, 63, of Cross Lanes, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2022 He was preceded in death by his parents Dennis and Loretta Sowards and 6 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his sister Cheryl Lynn Sowards and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a late date.

ROGER SPURLOCK
Roger Charles Spurlock, 71, of Hurricane, passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2022.
Roger was born in Putnam County on March 14, 1951. He is a son of the late Clay and Ercyl (Young) Spurlock. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Kelly Ashworth; sister Lana Spurlock and grandchild Roger Cole Spurlock.
He graduated from Hurricane High School in 1970 and was retired from the Cabell County School Bus Garage.
Roger is survived by his daughters, Lisa Tincher (Michael) of Hurricane, Rhonda Banks of TN; brothers, Londall Spurlock and Darrell Spurlock (Teresa) of Kenova; sister, Vicky Blankenship (Steve) of Kenova, and Cheryl Plymale (George) of Kenova; grandchildren, Tori and Sarah Tincher of Hurricane and Cody Ashworth of Sissonville; great grandchildren, Jamie and Jack Spurlock of Braxton County and Annabelle Gill of Ripley; and many friends and extended family.
Funeral was Friday November 18, 2022 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane. Interment was in Pine Grove Cemetery in Fraziers Bottom, with Pastor James Dennis officiating.

PHYLLIS WALKER
Phyllis Jean Walker, 89, of Longs, SC, formerly of Poca, went home to be with her Lord on November 22, 2022.
Phyllis was the daughter of the late A.W. “Jake” and Louise Lanham. She was also preceded in death by her brother Larry Lanham and nephew Brent Lanham.
She is survived by her three children – Mike (Linda) Thaxton, Diana (Paul) Bailey and Debbie (John) Soucek; five grandchildren – Paul “PJ” (Jennifer) Bailey, Dari (Todd) Grass, Deona (Kevin) Kemerer, Angel (Scottie) Withrow and Walker Soucek; eleven great-grandchildren – Brittany Boggs, Latisha and Ashley Middleton, Braxton Bailey, Logan and Caden Grass, Brett and Jeremy Kemerer, Jordan Dillinger, Michael and Ian Withrow; eight great-great-grandchildren (with three more on the way). She is also survived by her sister Dottie McAllister, nephews Duane and Randy Walker, and Brian and Bart Lanham, and her “adopted” son Steve Turnbull.
Before founding Walker’s Flower Basket in 1976, Phyllis worked many jobs in the area including Poca Supermarket. While she was proud of her successful business, her greatest joy in life was her family. She was a great friend to all who knew her.
Service was Saturday, November 26th at Cooke Funeral Home in Nitro. Burial wasw in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

MYRA CATHERINE WITHROW
Myra Catherine Withrow, 82, of Hurricane, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2022.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She was born November 12, 1940, in Gauley Bridge, to the late Edward and Margaret Mann. She was also preceded in death by sister, Laura Alice Mann.
She is survived by her husband, Glen Alden Withrow of Hurricane; children, Charles Withrow (Jennifer) of Georgetown, KY and Michael Withrow (Elizabeth) of Hurricane; grandchildren, Matthew, Olivia and Amanda; and 9 great grandchildren.
Graveside service was Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Kanawha Valley memorial Gardens, Glasgow. Burial was in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.

EDNA P. YOUNG
Edna P. Young, of Culloden, slipped away peacefully in her sleep at home in the early morning hours of November 21, after an extended illness. She was born and raised in Clendenin to the late Clarence and Verna “Lizzie” Reynolds Bird, where she met and married James C. Young on July 29, 1955 and they embarked on the journey of life sharing its highs and lows, happiness and tears, struggles and triumphs, living and loving happily for more than 60 years until death parted them with the passing of her best friend on March 9, 2016.
Edna is survived by five children, Randy (Debbie) Young of Ft. Mill, SC, Gary (Deanna) Young of Hurricane, Sherrie (Charlie) Thomas of Hurricane, Lisa Young of Culloden, and Karen Young of Hurricane. Also surviving are six granddaughters, Anna Young, of Cape Canaveral, FL, Tasha (Chris) Hatfield of Ona, Amy Thomas of St. Albans, Sara Thomas of Hurricane, Brooke White of Nicholasville, KY, and Kaylie Chin, of Hurricane; six grandsons, Justin (Laura) Young of Zumbrota, MN, Travis (Erica) Young of Polk City, FL, Adam (Heather) Cowan of Lexington, KY, Eric (Cherrien) Cowan of Panama City, FL, Gary Austin (Nora Phuong) Cowan of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, and Lucas Young of Huntington; these grandchildren blessed them with 16 great-grandchildren: Lucy, Jude, and Willow Young, Kinzie Young, Chloe Noel, Chase Cumpton, Trenton and Sophie Hatfield, Dawson and Oliver Neeley, Sophie Beane, Jacob Thomas, Landon Bradford, and Dawson and Kennedy White. Left to cherish her memory as well are her very special friends, Stella Alford of Milton, Nita DeBord of Culloden, Carolyn Cox of Charleston, Buddy and Joann Pauley of Charleston, “E” and Jerry Keister of Ocala, FL, Vince Fletcher, whom she considered an adopted son, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, neighbors, and friends.
Apart from her husband and parents, Edna was preceded in death by 5 siblings, William, Charles, and Bobby Bird, Betty Rodak and Ollie “Liz” Neumeyer, with whom she shared a deep and special bond, her beloved four month old great-granddaughter, Callie Grace Bradford, and her sweet fur baby, Pepper.
Service was Friday, November 25, 2022 at AllenFuneral Home. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery in Hurricane.
