Winfield High School Team 1 won second place in the Marshall University regional of the 2023 Academic Showdown.
The West Virginia Academic Showdown is a head-to-head competition in which teams from participating schools are tested in their knowledge of math, history, sports, fine arts and more. Teams are composed of students in grades 9 -12.
On Saturday, January 14, fifteen teams from Cabell, Mason, Putnam, and Wayne counties competed at Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center for an opportunity to advance. Huntington Team 1 and Winfield Team 1 defeated team after team in the double-elimination competition to finish first and second. Both teams will advance to the State finale at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston on March 31, 2023.
Hurricane Teams 1 & 2, Huntington Team 2, Poca, Point Pleasant Teams 1 & 2, Spring Valley Teams 1 & 2, Wahama Teams 1 & 2, and Wayne Teams 1 & 2 experienced second losses and were eliminated.
Statewide, 71 teams from 40 high schools representing 26 counties registered to compete in the Academic Showdown. Last year, 20 teams competed.
The Academic Showdown is a partnership between the WVDE, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, West Virginia Public Broadcasting and the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History.
