CARL LEON BENNETT
Carl Leon Bennett, 79, of Poca, passed away February 2, 2023.
Carl is a retired Stonemason and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Nelda Faye Bennett; brothers Dennis and his wife Judy Bennett, Billy Bennett, Jimmy Bennett, Jessie Bennett, and Michael Bennett; sisters Debbie Wheeler, Donna Fields, Connie Bennett, Sandra Bennett, and Norma Bennett; and a host of other family and friends.
At his request there will be no services.
WILLIAM RICK BOGGS
William “Rick” Boggs, 67, of Fraziers Bottom, passed away January 31, 2023 at HospiceCare at CAMC Memorial Hospital Charleston.
He was born on April 11, 1955 the son of Janette Boggs and the late Ossie Boggs.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Acie and Nancy Call.
Rick was retired from Boggs Trucking. Rick and his family enjoyed traveling WV, fishing, camping, watching his granddaughters play softball, T-ball and loved telling stories.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 37 years, Pam; their daughter Sarah (Shane) of Glenwood, WV and son Chad Fitch of Magnetic Springs, Ohio; grandchildren: Emma Hayes, Kenadi Hayes, Bryce (Terra) Fitch, Blake Fitch and Brittany Fitch; great-grandchildren: Bryson and Brayden Fitch; and his siblings: Barbara (John) Masiarczyk of Florida, Bethel Temple of Ohio, Bonnie (Alan Wilson) Call of Ohio, John (Kathy) Boggs of Ohio and Kip (Jackie) Boggs of Ohio; as well as many other family and friends.
Funeral Service for Rick was Friday February 3, 2023 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Pastor Kip Boggs officiating.
GLORIA JEAN BUMGARDNER
Gloria Jean “Jeannie” Bumgardner, 76, of Nitro, formerly of Liberty, trusted the Lord as her Savior the day before she entered Heaven on February 3, 2023.
Jeannie is retired from Tudors in Nitro.
She is preceded in death by her husband Dennis Bumgardner; parents Howard and Nellie Hedrick and all of her siblings.
She is survived by her two sons James Rambo and Ronnie Hawley and a host of nieces and nephews.
A tribute to the life of Jeannie will be 4:00 PM Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Elizabeth Baptist Church, Bancroft, with Pastor Jeff Arthur officiating.
KENNETH WARDEN DRUMMOND
Kenneth Warden Drummond, 94, of Hurricane, born 6-15-1928, went to sleep in Yehovah, Our God, on January 29, 2023 after a short illness.
He was born in Library, PA to Forrest Drummond and Enola Dugger and was their only son with five sisters. He leaves behind sister Betty who is 96. He is survived by his daughter, Judith McElfish and son, Kenneth T Drummond and wife Sue. Also surviving him are three grandchildren, Dr. Briana McElfish, Kendrick McElfish, and Kathryn Chaffin. He was also blessed with a great grand child, Ezra McElfish. Ken was a devout Christian and a WWII Veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Lucretia and also his wife in later life, Rose.
It was Ken’s wish to be cremated and a Memorial Service will be held at Forrest Burdette Church Chapel at 2:00pm, Saturday, February 11.
RAMONA JEAN GIBSON
Our dear mother and wife, Ramona Jean Gibson, of Poca, was born on November 27, 1941 and sadly departed this life on February 2, 2023 at the age of 81.
Ramona was preceded in death by her son Mark Gibson.
She is survived by her husband Bobby Lee Gibson; sister Paula of FL; cousin Lisa of FL; three children Charles Easter (Beverly) of Cross Lanes, Aaron Gibson (Shelia) of Winfield, and Melanie Gibson (Greg Davis) of Alexandra, VA; five grandchildren Matthew, Anthony, and Seth Easter, Owen Davis, and Rebecca Sites (Jesse) and one great grandchild Annaclaire Burford.
A tribute to the life of Mrs. Ramona Gibson was held Monday, February 6, 2023 at Haven of Rest Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with Pastor Tom Moore officiating. Entombment was in the memory gardens.
DARRELL GENE HARRIS
Darrell Gene Harris, of Hurricane, born July 23, 1951, passed away at his home February 2, 2023. Darrell was the son of the late Carl and Macil Harris.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 50 years, Jane Harris, brother Sherrill Harris and sister Linda Fry; daughter Charlotte Shepherd (Arnold) of Layland, WV; grandson Chad Shepherd (Nicole) of Piney View, WV; great granddaughter Jada and great grandson Tyler. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Paul Harris, Larry Harris, Mary Hughes and Rosetta Ward.
Darrell served as a US Marine for 2 years and a coal miner for 20 years. He loved to fish, hunt and spend time with his family and friends. There will be no services. Darrell will spend his eternal life at Layland Cemetery, Layland, WV.
KENNETH DEAN SMITH
Kenneth Dean Smith, 85, of Eleanor, entered his heavenly home on February 1, 2023 at CAMC Teays Valley following a short illness. During his working career, the job he enjoyed the most was driving a milk truck for ten years. Dean loved to gather together with his family and friends to play Bluegrass, Country and Gospel music every chance he got. He was a member of the Kanawha Players and would travel to play at local events. He loved to mow grass and was always mowing for family, friends and local businesses. He loved tinkering around in his garage, fixing things and riding his side by side around town.
Dean was born on March 21st 1937 in Chillicothe, OH to the late Sullivan Agie Smith and Mary Stutler Smith. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Norma L. Smith; brother, Carroll Smith and sister, Marjorie Jividen.
He is survived by his special and loving companion Patty Isaac of Eleanor; son, Bill Smith and his wife Reba of Eleanor; daughter Karen Cogar of Webster Springs; brother, Curtis (Linda) Smith of Ashville OH; sisters, Gloria Tribble of Leon and Brida Humphrey of Eleanor; special niece, Brenda Tribble of Leon; sister in law, Stella Doughty of Dunbar; 5 grandchildren and 11great grandchildren. Dean is also survived by several nieces , nephews, extended family and friends.
Funeral service was Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Raynes Funeral Home, Eleanor, with Pastor David Panaro Jr. officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Given.
ROBERT SPURGEON
Robert (Bob) Oral Spurgeon, 90, of Hurricane, was taken to his Heavenly Home by Angels on February 1st, 2023. He passed away peacefully at home. He was born at Fawn Run, Gilmer County, on October 25, 1932 to the late Oral and Stacy Spurgeon. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his only sister, Winoma Spurgeon. He is survived by his loving wife, Clela Eileen of 68 years; his two sons, Randall (Debbie), and Daniel (Tammy), his only daughter Terri (Larry Harrison). He is also survived by grandsons Joseph (Rowina), David (Nicole), Josh(Mindi), Jonathan(Savannah), and Luke and two granddaughters Sarah(Justin), and Amy as well as 16 great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
Growing up he was a member of the Future Farmers of America, 4H clubs, and high school basketball team. He graduated from Troy High School and attended Glenville State College, West Virginia Tech and graduated from American Technical Institute in Akron Ohio with an associate degree in engineering. He married his sweet wife, Clela Eileen Moore of Smithburg, WV on March 14th, 1954. They lived on the Spurgeon farm until November 1954 when he was called into service for his country. He served in the Army and was deployed to Germany for 19 months.
Early in his career, he worked at both Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and B. F. Goodrich Co. He was later employed by PPG Industries as a contract estimator for 20 years and worked in many different states including WV, OH, IN, and Ml before returning home to WV. While residing in Flint, Michigan he was president of the Kawanas club. After returning to WV, he continued to work for PPG Industries for 3 more years before going to work for General Glass Co. in Charleston as a contract manager.
Bob was led to Christ at a young age by his Sunday School teacher at the Church of The Brethren and remained a devout Christian throughout his Life, always involved in churchwork in all the places he lived. He was a member and former Deacon at First Baptist Church in Hurricane. He was very musically talented, singing bass in church choirs and barbershop quartets as well as playing several musical instruments. Bob enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting, woodworking, and time spent with family.
Service was Saturday, February 4th, at First Baptist Church in Hurricane, with Pastor Jeff Davenport and Rev. Jerry Losh officiating. Bob was laid to rest at Valley View Memorial Park in Hurricane on Monday, February 6th with military honors.
PAUL R. WATSON
Paul Ray Watson, 80, of Winfield, passed away February 3, 2023 at the Hubbard Hospice House Charleston.
Paul was a retired Truck Driver and a member of the Teamsters Union, early in his career he was a General Manager at Wall’s Motor Sales. He also sold and delivered mobile homes then moved on being a truck driver delivering alcohol to the ABC Stores though out the State, he then moved on to driving for Hartley Trucking and then retiring from H&W Trucking.
He was born December 24, 1943 in Putnam County and is a son of the late John Sr. and Garnett Call Watson. In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by brothers: John Jr., Willie, Robert, James, Kenneth, Bernard, and Infant siblings: Ronald and Alma Watson.
Paul is survived by his wife, Phyllis Watson; children: Greg (Robin) Watson and Kevin (Michelle) Watson; grandchildren: Joshua Watson and Nathaniel Watson aka “his partners in crime”; step-grandchildren: Jackson (Emily) Kiser, and Emily (Trae) Bush; and step-great-grandchild: Grey Kiser. Paul is also survived by his sister, Linda Meeks and a host of Nieces and Nephews.
Paul’s Funeral Service was Thursday February 9, 2023 at Chapman Funeral Home, Winfield Burial was in Winfield Cemetery Winfield.
