PAUL E. BAILEY
Paul E. Bailey, 91, of Inverness, FL, passed away at his home in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 17, 2024. He was Superintendent of West Virginia Steel in Charleston for years and he was also a very active member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a Christian. Paul and his late wife Lillian lived between West Virginia and Florida for many years, and about nine or ten years ago became full-time residents of Florida.
Paul was born September 14, 1932, to Carl and Addie (Harrison) Bailey in Putnam County and was one of twelve children born to the couple.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Lillian Bailey in 2016, and by most of his siblings.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Melissa Bailey of Inverness, FL; his sister, Anna Ruth Hawley of WV; his brothers, Lee Bailey and John Bailey, both of WV. Paul is also survived by many other family members and friends.
Funeral service was Monday, March 25, 2024 at Raynes Funeral Home, Eleanor, with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial was in Humphreys Cemetery, Poca.

JANICE CLARK
Janice Imogene Clark, Beloved mother, grandmother, and retired Putnam County School bus driver, passed away on March 22, 2024, at the age of 96.
Born on March 19, 1928, Janice leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness.
Janice is preceded by her parents Yeoman Wade and Arvella Wade of Hurricane, her daughter, Faye (Doneff) Quentrill and her son Tony Doneff. Also, her brothers, Rexall Wade and Dexall Wade.
She is survived by her sons, Calvin Smith, Terry Chapman, Roger Doneff and Alan Doneff as well as her daughter Doris Maynard and a brother Roger (Jimmy) Wade. She was a cherished grandmother to several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Janice also had many nieces and nephews.
Throughout her life, Janice touched the hearts of many as she safely transported generations of children to and from school.
In her spare time from work she always enjoyed her family, fishing and hunting. Janice’s presence will be deeply missed but her memory will forever live on inn the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Funeral service was Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at Allen Funeral Home in Hurricane. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park.

BETTY LUCILLE DEEM
Betty L. Deem, 97, passed peacefully in her sleep March 18, 2024.
Born August 12, 1926 to the late Robert G. Yates and Delphia D. Hill, she was the last of her family to leave this earth who grew up in Nitro.
She was a wonderful person, a loving mother, a good neighbor, and a good Christian to all that knew her and loved her. She knew and spoke of Jesus daily.
Mother is survived by her daughter; Linda J. Gillispie of Fraziers Bottom; son, Richard A. Miller Jr. (Vicky) of St Albans; grandchildren: Larry J. Gillispie (Bobbie) of Culloden, Robert A. Miller (Rachel) of Melbourne FL, Elizabeth Miller Thomas Robinson (Derek) of Dunnellon, FL, Dana L. Gillispie of Fraziers Bottom; 5 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews all of whom had shared their love for her in one way or another down through the years.
Let the Lord be praised at the passing of Betty L. Yates Miller Deem.
Funeral Service for Betty was Friday March 22, 2024 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Rev. Gary Hale officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Shirley Ann Parliament
Shirley Ann Parliament, 67, of Scott Depot, passed away March 5, 2024, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Born on April 15, 1956, in Columbus, OH, she was one of six children. Shirley was a 1974 graduate of Central High School in Columbus and worked at Dunbar Printing for 40 years after moving to the Scott Depot area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Burdette.
Shirley is survived by three sons, Ian Copley, Aaron Copley (wife Mavel), and Ryan Copley (wife Katrina); two grandchildren, AJ Copley and Sophia Copley, along with two sisters and three brothers.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024.

Timothy Sergent
Timothy Darren Sergent, 58, passed away on March 22, 2024. He was the loving husband of Traci Koch Sergent for twenty-five years, and a devoted father to his two children, Jenna and Lucas.
Tim was born in Hurricane, the son of the late Gerreld Sergent and Rosa Lee Miller Sergent. He graduated from Hurricane High School and lived most of his life in Hurricane. He made a life out of what he loved, which was helping fix anything that was broken.
Outside of work, Tim loved to hunt, fish, enjoy the outdoors, and pester his dog Ester. He will be remembered for always being willing to lend a helping hand to his family and friends.
Funeral service was held for Tim at Allen Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 26. Internment was at the Sycamore Cemetery.

Anna Marie Shafer
Anna Marie Shafer, 62, of Poca, passed away on March 19, 2024, at home under the care of Hospice Care, after a short illness.
Anna was born in Charleston on July 19, 1961, and attended Poca Schools. She was a homemaker and previous employee of Tudors in Nitro and Island of Palms Cleaning Service of Charleston, SC. She enjoyed spending time with her family and making jewelry.
She is following into death her father Glen Edward Shafer, mother Doris Myrtle (Cottrell) Shafer and younger brother Brian Shafer.
She is survived by her boyfriend of 32 years, David Craig; two sons Clint Eugene Hollandsworth of Nitro and Phillip Michael Shafer of Poca; two sisters Alice Cart and her husband David Cart of Charleston and Marion Cooper and her husband Franklin of Eleanor; three brothers Roger Shafer of Nitro, Richard Shafer of Nitro, and Kenneth Shafer of Teays Valley; granddaughter Abagail Hollandsworth of Scott Depot; grandson Noah Hollandsworth and his fiancé Krystin Little of Scott Depot; great grandson Xaier Smith of Scott Depot; best friend for many years Patra Cadle; son like figure James “Jimmy” Kane and his daughters Dakota and London Kane, and their late mom and wife, that was Anna’s dear friend, Shanda Nichole “Nikki” Kane.
Anna never turned anyone out, so she considered all kids as her own and with those son-like figures that were always around Cody Picken and Christopher Troy Holstein. Two wonderful friends and neighbors for many years Anna thought the world of were Leslie Emswiller and husband William “Bill” Emswiller and daughter Jerkia Emswiller and her boyfriend Chance and their son JJ. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, friends, and dear friends Dawayna Bowers of Poca, Joanette Brantley and son Garrett “James” Brantley of Poca.

Carl Smith Sr.
Carl Edward Smith, Sr., 92, of Conway, SC, formerly of West Virginia, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2024, with his loving family by his side. Carl was born on March 19, 1932, in Charleston, to parents Joseph Smith and Nola McKemy.
Carl was a devout Christian who was a member of Maple Baptist Church. He also enjoyed attending Covenant Presbyterian Church in Nitro and Perrow Presbyterian Church in Cross Lanes.
Carl is survived by his son, Brian (Juliet) Smith; grandchildren, Brian J. (Heather) Smith, Shannon (Jackie) Stephenson, Candy (Huy Doan) Cai, Ben (Stephanie) Smith, Sam (Whitney) Smith, Eddie (Emily) Smith, Elijah (Lindsey) Smtih, Mandy (Glenn) Davis, Carol Smith, Kirstin (Shane) Unrue, and Lauren Smith; great-grandchildren, Emma, Becca, Brady, Shalyn, Cooper, Tyson, Ethan, Jacob, Leland, Micah, Bastian, Addison, Elle, Levi, Lucas, Elliot, Ivy, Skylar, Savannah, and Leighlah; brothers, Marvin (Maxine) Smith and Joe (Gloria) Smith; sisters, Norma Jarrett and Libby (Fred) Painter; and good friend Sara Viqoletti.
He is preceded in death by his wife Carol Ann Lilly Smith who passed in 1999; son Carl Edward Smith, Jr. who passed in 2012, and parents Joseph Smith and Nola McKemy.
Funeral service was Thursday, March 28, 2024 at Allen Funeral Home with Pastor Blair Hayes officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mt. Memorial Gardens.

William Lewis Smith
William Lewis “Bill” Smith, 73, of Winfield, died March 23, 2024 at home following a courageous battle with colon cancer.
Bill was born June 21, 1950 in Charleston to Lewis and Nora Smith. He graduated from DuPont High School in 1969 and would then be drafted by the US Army where he would proudly serve as a member of the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. Bill worked as a coal tipple operator for Amherst Madison and in his retirement as a driver for Enterprise where he would forge many friendships. He attended Winfield Baptist Church, a loyal Mountaineer, and a friend to all he met.
Bill is survived by his wife of 49 years Billie, his daughter Carrie, and his son Charles as well as his sister Mary Stewart. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Jesse Smith.
Funeral service was Wednesday, March 27, at Winfield Baptist Church, Winfield.

Gary E. Stanley
Gary Edward Stanley, 74, of Hurricane, went Home to the Lord on Friday, March 22, 2024.
He was preceded in death by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Wilma Jean McDaniel Stanley; parents: Lonnie and Kathern Keith Stanley; sisters: Connie Call and Betty Mullins; and brothers: Lonnie Jr., Charles, Bill and Virgil Gene Stanley.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Tonya Casto (Mark); son, Gary E. Stanley II; grandchildren: Kyle Casto, Lauren Casto and Grayson Stanley; sisters: Joyce Holley (Joe) and Peggy Stanley Tawney; brothers: Danny Stanley (Doris) and Roger Stanley (Carolyn); sister-in-law, Elaine McDaniel and brothers-in-law: Mike and Greg McDaniel; as well as many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Gary’s love and devotion to his family was always evident, as he shared his pride in his grandchildren with all who would listen. He never met a stranger and had a wit that never stopped. He brought unending joy to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
He retired from the WVDOH, as the Supervisor of Putnam County. His work ethic and desire to provide for his family were unmatched. After retirement, he worked as a consultant for WVDOH and supervised neighboring counties.
Funeral Service for Gary was Thursday, March 28, 2024 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
