Winfield, Buffalo State Track Champions

Saturday, May 18, was State Championship time for Buffalo Boys, Winfield Girls, and Winfield Boys. It was also State record-breaking times in Class A, Class AA, and Class AAA in the 1600 meters. All three record times now belong to Putnam County boys.

Ty Steorts of Hurricane set the Class AAA state meet record in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:07.75; Justin Lipscomb of Winfield set the Class AA 1600 meter record with 4:13.77; and Buffalo’s Nicholas Pitchford posted a Class A record 4:17.20 time.

Both the 2024 Class AA girls’ and boys’ state track championship trophies will be joining those won by Winfield girls in the last five state meets and the boys 2022 championship trophy.

The Winfield boys were paced by individual high point champion Justin Lipscomb, winner of the 3200 meter run on Friday and the 1600 meter and the 800 meter on Saturday. Chase Massey won the 100 meter run and the Generals 4×400 relay team finished with a victory.

Winfield girls won their fifth consecutive state championship, scoring 99.83 points. Carlie Sibold won the 100 meter run for WHS.

In Class A, Buffalo won their second consecutive title. Nicholas Pitchford earned high point honors with wins in the 3200 meter run on Friday and is state-record in the 1600, and a win in the 800 meters. Cole Whittington won the 300 meter hurdles.

In Class AAA, Cabell Midland won with a 108 point total. Hurricane finished second with 76, followed by Huntington High with 75.
