EVELYN IRENE EDWARDS
Evelyn Irene Edwards, March 13, 1943 – January 24, 2025, Our mother, grandmother, aunt and great grandmother. She was an Afghan blanket crocheter maker, certified nursing assistant, church member of Bethel Baptist Church of Hurricane.
She went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 24 after a short illness. Go rest high on that Mountain. We love you and will miss you always.
Evelyn of Hurricane and Culloden was married to Virgil N. Edwards (21 years, ex-husband) had two shared sons, Steven N. Edwards of Hagerstown, MD and Mark A. Edwards (Denise Withrow-Edwards daughter-in-law) of Hurricane. Her grandchildren, from Steven: Megan L Edwards-Pettrey of Harrison County, West Virginia, Gavin C Edwards and fiancé Dolora Huacache and future great grandsons, Chris and Nikos of Brunswick, MD, Seth C Edwards of Ft. Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Trenton C Edwards of Middletown, MD. Step-grandchildren, Megan J Hayden (Phil) and great-grandchildren Cole and Ella, of Middletown, MD, S. Chase Martin (Maria) and step-grandson, Logan of Mt. Airy, MD. From Mark and Denise: Granddaughter, Cherish Shiflett (Jacob) with great grandchildren, Berklee and Rawlings of Morgantown. Grandson, Tyson Edwards of Hurricane, (fiancé Dr. Maggie Rumbaugh) of Winfield.
KENNETH J. EGGLETON
Kenneth J. Eggleton, 77, of Scott Depot, passed on February 15, 2025, at home after a sudden illness.
He was born on August 5, 1947 to the late William J. and Sylvia Eggleton of Scott Depot.
He was a 1965 graduate of Winfield High School and attended WV State University. Kenny proudly served in the US Navy, aboard the USS Aucilla AO-56 in the Mediterranean. He then worked for Union Carbide Construction as Craft Supervisor and continued working in the plant retiring from Greenwood.
Kenny was a 50 year member of Washington Lodge #58 St. Albans AF & AM, Past Commander of York Rite Bodies, Kanawha Commandery #4, Beni Kedem Shrine and St. Albans Chapter #79 Order of the Eastern Star.
He enjoyed riding his Goldwing Motorcycle, boating at Sutton Lake on his “Misty K”, woodworking and mowing on his John Deere tractor. He also took great pride in driving the Shriners Van taking children to the Shriners Hospitals in Lexington and Cincinnati. Kenny loved his dogs, Koda & Kenzie, who miss him terribly. With his love for animals Kenny volunteered on many community projects and one of the most significant was building an Animal Shelter in Winfield in 1985. He was most proud of building two of his homes, the last on the property where he was raised.
Kenny grew up in Scott Depot Church of God and attended Abney Street Church of God and Teays Valley Church of God over the years.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Karen DeHart Eggleton; sister, nephew, nieces and many friends.
Funeral service was Wednesday, February 16, 2025, in the Upper Mausoleum at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, with Pastor Robert Morris officiating.
MAXINE C. GARDNER
Maxine C. Gardner, 90, of Midway, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Hubbard Hospice House West at Thomas Memorial Hospital. She was graduate of Poca High School and a life long homemaker. She was a longtime member of Faith Christian Fellowship in Buffalo.
Born September 8, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Orie Rowe and Talma Rowe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Ross R. “Bud” Gardner.
Survivors include her son, Jeff Gardner of Morrow, OH and her sister, Nancy (Delbert) Pitchford of Eleanor.
Funeral service was Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Raynes Funeral Home, Eleanor, with Pastor Paul Boggess officiating. Burial was in Beech Grove Cemetery, Eleanor.
Jonathan Martin
Jonathan E. Martin, 75, of Hurricane, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at CAMC Teays Valley after a sudden illness.
He retired from the State of West Virginia as a mechanic and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He graduated from Poca High School class of 1968; he was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his loving wife Wilodene; Daughter, Ashley (Scott) Stalnaker of Hurricane; Son, Travis (Jennette) Martin of Catawba SC; Grandchildren, Haley Oxley, Brooke Oxley and Eli Martin, his 3 dogs that he absolutely adored, Sisters, Jane Ellen (Chris) Smith Danville, WV Paulette (Dempsey) Wright of Monroe, NC.
Memorial service was held Monday, February 17, at Allen Funeral Home.
Isadora ‘Izzy’ McCarty
Isadora Lyn “Izzy” McCarty, 47, of Hurricane, passed away Friday, February 7, 2025, at her parents home.
She was born January 4, 1978, in Point Pleasant, a daughter of Lonnie Lee McCarty and Madora May (Wilson) McCarty.
Isadora was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Clarence and Geneva McCarty; maternal grandparents, David and Joyce Wilson; an uncle, Nathan Wilson; and three cousins, Adam McCarty, Tonda Nelson and Jessica Spencer.
Isadora was a graduate of Point Pleasant High School Class of 1996 and a graduate of Marshall University Class of 2010. She was a member of Moxie Fitness in Hurricane, where she enjoyed the company of all the ladies there. Isadora enjoyed kayaking, vacationing at the beach and loved her cats Baby and GG. She was a Rural Mail Carrier for the United States Postal Service for 20 plus years.
Isadora is survived by her parents, Lonnie Lee and Madora May McCarty of Apple Grove; three children, Riley Lee Griffith of Fraziers Bottom, Geneva “Neva” Marie Kyle and Aven Elizabeth Kyle both of Hurricane; a brother, James “Jamo” (Cookie) McCarty of Apple Grove; a niece and nephew, Daphne and Gabe McCarty both of Apple Grove; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; a special childhood friend, Melody Nutter Jackson of Lebanon, OH; and previous husbands, Greg Griffith of Fraziers Bottom, and Brent Kyle of Hurricane.
Funeral service was Friday, February 14, 2025, at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, with Pastor Ronald Long officiating. Burial was in Bowcott Cemetery in Fraziers Bottom.
Joanne Sovine
Joanne Sovine, a lifelong resident of Hurricane, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on February 11, 2025 at the age of 93.
Born on April 15, 1931, Joanne was the daughter of Bryan and Martha Neumeyer. She graduated from Hurricane High School and went on to work at Huntington Photo Lab for many years before retiring from Putnam County Bank.
In 1949, Joanne married the love of her life, Bob Sovine, together they had two children: Robert (Denise) and Debbie (Scott).
Joanne was a lifelong member of Forrest Burdette United Methodist Church, where she was an active attendee and the oldest living member at the time of her passing. She cherished teaching her great-grandchildren old games, life lessons and will be deeply missed by her loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents: Bryan and Martha Neumeyer; brothers: James, Bobby, Clifton (Lefty) and Denzil Neumeyer; and sisters: Betty Courts and Ruth Parsons.
Joanne is survived by her sister, Arlene Austin; children: Debbie Sovine Hoffman (Scott) and Robert (Denise); four grandchildren: Meagen Riddle (Justin), Courtney Young, Matt (Megan), and Drew (Meagan); seven great-grandchildren: Bailey, Kaden, Dawson, Weston, Jude, Natalie, and Jack. As well as a special niece, Janie Culp.
Rest In Peace, Mamaw, Your legacy will live on through your family and the countless lives you touched.
Joanne was laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Bob in Valley View Memorial Park Hurricane.
Paul Marlin Westfall
Paul Marlin Westfall, 90, of Buffalo, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at his home. He was a 1952 graduate of Elkview High School, and a graduate of Morris Harvey College. He received his Masters Degree from the University of Minnesota. He retired as a Chemist from Union Carbide Corporation. He had secured 17 patents for his inventions over the years.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his earlier years and was an avid reader of old, classic Western books.
Born October 12, 1934, he was the son of the late Earston and Wava Westfall. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death in 2020 by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Lee Westfall; his brother, Karl Westfall; his sister, Shelby Paskel; and his son- in-law, John “Buster” Miles.
He is survived by his daughters, Debra Miles of Travelers Rest, SC, and Karen (Kenneth E.) Hanson of Morgantown; grandchildren, David Miles, James Miles, Travis Hanson, Tara Hanson and Torin Hanson; and great grandchildren, Iris Hart-Hanson, Eliana Miles and Caleb Miles.
A visitation was held Saturday, February 15, 2025 at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo. A private family graveside service is planned at Franklin Cemetery, Branchland, at a later date.
