PEGGY BUSH
Peggy Jane Oxley Bush, 87, of Hurricane, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Etta Bird Oxley; sister Louise McCallister and brothers, Shelby Oxley and Larry Oxley.
Peggy was a faithful follower of Christ and a member of the Hurricane First Baptist Church where she was very active for many years especially in mission work.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Dwane Bush, daughter, Donna Swartz and her husband Craig of Englewood Ohio; grandchildren, Luke (Ashli), Magalie (Eric), and Rachel; great grandchildren, Kamren, Kennedi, Addie, and Eliza; step-grandchildren, Andrew (Melanie), Sheldon (Danielle), and Cassie. step -great grandchildren, Dexter, Reagan, and Akira; sister, Joyce Grass of Maine.
Funeral service was Monday, March 17, 2024, at Hurricane First Baptist Church. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park.

DANIEL DAVIS
Daniel Ray “Danny” Davis, 68, of St. Albans, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, March 15, 2025 in CAMC Hospice.
Danny is a 1974 Graduate of Poca High School and retired concrete finisher.
He is preceded in death by his parents Park and Edith Davis and seven siblings John, James, Dorothy, Bill, June, Janet, and Jenny.
Danny is survived by his son Paul (Sarah) Davis of MI; four siblings Woody (Linda) Davis of FL, Gary (Nancy) Davis of St. Albans, Gene Davis of Bancroft, and Betty Bailey (Doug) Jones of VA and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
A tribute to the life of Danny was held Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor James Legg officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens, Red House.

EULA JUANITA DAVIS
Eula Juanita Davis, 88, of Winfield, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at home.
Juanita is a graduate of Logan High School and Morris Harvey College. She is retired Registered Nurse from Thomas Memorial Hospital and a member of Lone Oak Church of God Mission.
She is preceded in death by her husband Ira L. Davis, son Stephen M. Davis, parents Rev. Moss and Thelma Craddock, brother Lewis Moss Craddock, and sister Helena White.
Juanita is survived by her daughter Leah Davis Craner and husband Fred; brother Larry David Craddock and wife Sherry; and three grandchildren Sarah Zinkl and husband Carl, Amber Davis, and Megan Gray and husband Ethan.
A tribute to the life of Eula Juanita Davis was held Friday, March 14, 2025 at Haven of Rest Memory Gardens with Pastor Scott Casto officiating.

CAROLYN MILTON GUTHRIE
Carolyn Milton Guthrie, 86, of Hurricane, native of St. Albans, passed away March 11, 2025.
She was born August 19, 1938 to the late Loyd Lester Milton and LaEunice Alice Easter Milton in Saint Albans. Also preceding in death is her husband, Robert L. Guthrie; and sisters, Jean Denson and Jo Ellen Hornbeck.
Carolyn worked as a clerk with BP Service Station, also AT&T, was a Girl Scout Leader from 1975-77 and Boy Scout Leader from 1975-79, a member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane, but her life revolved around her home and family once Scott and Robin were born.
Surviving her are her children, Scott Guthrie (Elizabeth) of Cary, NC and Robin Marshall (Michael) of Buffalo; sister, Barbara Milton of St. Albans; grandchildren, Brian Guthrie, Chelsea Marshall and Meredith Guthrie; and many other extended family and friends.
Funeral service was Monday, March 17, 2025, at Bartlett-Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Losh officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Ida Blanche Hanson
Ida Blanche Morris Hanson, 95, of Scott Depot, passed away on March 12, 2025 at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC.
She was born in Charleston on March 16, 1929, the third of four children of the late Claude B. Morris, Sr. and Eula Newhouse Morris. In addition to her parents, Blanche was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Richard L. Hanson, Sr; brothers: Julius C. Morris and Claude B. Morris, Jr. and her sister, Martha Morris Hall Nunley.
Blanche and Richard were married August 12, 1950. Together they had five children: Richard L. Jr. of Winston Salem, NC, Thomas A. (MaryPat) of Charlottesville, VA, William C. “Corky” (Tammy) of Sarasota, FL, Terrence W. (Kathy) of Culloden, and Susan C. Kennedy (Shawn) of Garner, NC.
She is survived by 11 grandchildren: Eric Hanson, Greg Hanson, Tim Hanson, James Hanson, Katherine McPherson, Andrew Hanson, Michelle Roynak, Taylor Hill, Adam “A. J.” Hanson, Jennifer Johnson and Scott Dooley; 16 great-grandchildren: Noah and Luke Hanson, Hadleigh and Harper Hanson, Lindell and Levon Hanson, Miller McPherson, Waylon Hanson, Maci Hanson, Kinley and Brayden Hill, Austin Ronyak, Peyton Hagen, Madeline, Caroline and Ryan Johnson; brother-in-laws: William Hanson of Winston Salem, NC, Robert Hanson of Hurricane; and sister-in-laws: Georgia and Joyce Hanson, both of Scott Depot. With such a large extended family, Blanche is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who thought so fondly of their gentle Aunt Blanche.
As a very young girl during the Depression, Blanche and her family lived in a house boat on the Kanawha River. She attended Charleston High School, where she played center on the girls’ basketball team. Blanche and Richard moved to Scott Depot in 1953. They raised their five children in the home they built and shared for over 70 years.
Funeral service for Blanche will be 1:00 pm, Friday, March 21, 2025 at Chapman Funeral Home, Winfield, with son-in-law, Deacon Shawn Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in Winfield Cemetery.

Andrew Dewey Hargraves
Andrew D. Hargraves, 72, of Hurricane, formerly of Lawton, OK, passed away on March 7, 2025.
Andrew was born January 5, 1953 in Valdosta, GA to the late Edward Dewey and Marianne Elisabeth Hargraves. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers: Eddy John Hargraves and Randy Hargraves.
Andrew grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma, where he retired after working 32 years from the City of Lawton as the Superintendent of the Water Department. Andrew was quite the jokester and always full of laughter. He sure could tell some pretty outrageous stories. He loved his family and enjoyed golfing, fishing, going camping, and playing card games.
He is survived by his previous wives: Kori Lynn Hargraves, in which he most recently reunited in love with and Dianne Reece who was his Best Friend; loving children: Melissa Dawn Ellison (Richard) of Poplarville, MS, Andrea Lynn Whisenhunt (Jeffrey) of Westpoint, VA, and David Andrei Hargraves, of Hurricane, WV; sisters: Sandra Elisabeth Yenchesky (Roy) of Goddard, KS and Kathy Mary Ann Wood (Roger) of Center City, MN; grandchildren: Shawna, Tristen, and Dalton Opre, Richard Ellison Montano, Andrew and Aidan Sellers, Harlee Whisenhunt; great-grandchildren: Luke, Sawyer, and Hunter Berger, and Aria Ellison; several nieces and a nephew.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Medicine Park, OK at a later date.

Fern B. Hunter
Fern B. Hunter, 90, of Red House, passed away on March 11, 2025, at English Meadows in Scott Depot.
Fern was born in 1935 in Clendenin. Her family moved to Hometown where she grew up and graduated from Poca High School. She met and married Luigi Hunter in mid 1950s and had two children, James and Jill. In 1961, they moved into their home on Little Guano Creek. She lived there for the majority of the balance of her life. After the death of her husband, Fern began a career in early 1980’s at City National Bank that lasted nearly 30 years. She made numerous friends with employees and customers at the Bank. Fern was lifelong member of Wilkinson United Methodist Church in Hometown. Fern loved gardening and working in her yard and could spend hours watching the countless species of birds that lived in Guano Creek. Another daily ritual was reading spiritual literature and devotionals. At the end of her life, she found great comfort in having scripture read to her and listening to Old Hymns. Fern left this world 90 years to day of her arrival. She will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and Ava Strickland Blackwell; husband, Lewis (Luigi) Hoyt Hunter; brother, Kenneth Blackwell.
Fern is survived by her son, James Hoyt Hunter; daughter, Jill H. Pullen (Robert); sister, Sharon Morton.
A graveside service to Honor the Life of Fern was held Wednesday, March 19, 2025 in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, with H.R. Whittington officiating.

Robert Knowles
Robert R. Knowles, of Hurricane, unexpectedly passed away at his home on Saturday, March 15, 2025. Robert was born on March 12, 1964 to the late David R. Knowles and Marie E. Knowles (Kimbler). In addition to his parents Robert is preceded in death with his younger brother David W. Knowles.
Robert was a proud husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and uncle. He worked at Center Industry Corporation in Wichita Kansas for over 30 years as a manufacturing supervisor before retiring in 2010 and returning to West Virginia. Robert was always a kind, smart, loving family man. He was born with cerebral pasly but never let that stop him from his accomplishments. Robert use to love sitting in the car after work and listen to baseball games. He also loved watching football and being with his family.
Robert R. Knowles is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lori Knowles, son James Knowles, daughter Katie Knowles, son in law Zachery Spears, 4 grandchildren Dalton Harper, Skylar Harper, Connor Harper, and Devin Spears, sister Debbie Handley Bird, Brother in law Ricky Bird, and many many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Allen Funeral Home in Hurricane on Friday, March 21, 2025 from 12-2 pm. Followed by the burial at Bird Cemetery. We will be doing a live feed on zoom for family and friends out of town. Link will be posted to Facebook before services start.

Elissa Dawn Nalle-Mathes
Elissa Dawn Nalle Mathes, 48, of Eleanor, passed away on March 13, 2025 at CAMC Memorial after a sudden illness.
She was born on June 5, 1976, to Charles D. and Jane Beth Richardson Nalle in Charleston. Elissa was a graduate of Buffalo High School Class of 1994, attended Marshall University and a graduate of Mountaineer Beauty College. She was most recently employed as the Salon Manager with JC Penny Hair Salon in Charleston. During high school, she was an accomplished athlete holding a track record that still stands and being the first BHS female athlete that was invited to WV All State Softball team, as well as enjoyed being a cheerleader. Elissa was also a former member of the Eleanor Fire Dept.
In addition to her parents, Chuck and Jane Nalle; she is survived by her family that she loved fiercely, her husband, Chad Mathes; daughters: Hannah Morgan Smalley and Kayleigh Dawn Hayzlett both of Eleanor; stepdaughters: Carly Mathes and Caitlin (Jake) Mathes Martin and their infant twins: Cade and Carson; all of Nitro, WV; sister, Mandy (Jimmy) McCallister and their son, Wyatt of Eleanor; maternal aunt: Sally Moore of Eleanor; paternal aunt, Sandy (Brad) Nalle Curry and Joyce Nalle of East Bank, WV; father in-law: Kevin Mathes; mother in-law, Debra (Jack) Jordan; brother in-laws: Casey (Courtney) Mathes and their children: Craylin, Corbin and Cohin; Charlton (Kylie Jo) Jordan and their children: Charlee, Frankie-Jean and Tate; uncle in-law, Ernie (Sherry) Hedrick all of Nitro; as well as several other family members.

Juanita Geraldine Miller
Juanita Geraldine Bowens Miller of Hendersonville, TN, formerly of Scott Depot, walked into the arms of Jesus the morning of March 10, 2025.
Known affectionately to many as “Jerry”, she was born in Scott Depot to the late Edith (Lovejoy) Bowens and William Isaac Bowens on April 8, 1930. Her mother Edith died when she was five, and her father later remarried Rosie, the woman who would take on the role as her mother.
Jerry and her siblings: Harold, Henry and Vera Bowens, grew up on a small family farm with siblings from Rosie and William – her sisters: Dolores and Loretta, and brother, Eddie in Scott Depot.
Jerry attended college for two years, but the pressing need for school teachers in their rural community moved her to become a teacher in a one room schoolhouse. She later married Vernon William Miller, and they moved to Marion, Ohio, where they raised their four children: Verna, Sandy, Mark and Eddie Miller.
Jerry was a stay home mom until her children went to school, and she then began her 2nd career as a teacher’s assistant at MARCA School for Special Needs Children, where she retired. Upon retirement, Jerry and Vernon moved to Smyrna, Tennessee where their 4 children resided.
Jerry was a believer in Jesus, a devoted wife of 65 years, and a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was feisty, very independent, and a survivor in every sense of the word. She will be missed by her family and by her friends at Legacy Village in Hendersonville.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Vernon Miller; son, Eddie Miller; grandson, Ryan Rodgers; brothers: Henry Bowens, Harold Bowens (Jeanne), Eddie Bowens; sisters: Vera Bowens Anderson, Dolores Jean Bowens Miles, Loretta Bowens Payton; brother-in-law, Doug Miles; and son-in-law, Judd Newman.
She is survived by her daughters: Verna Wyatt (Christopher) and Sandy Newman; son, Mark Miller; sister-in-law, Suzanne Bowens; grandchildren: Keith Rodgers (Samantha), Noah Newman (Alex), Nate Newman, Christopher Wyatt (Alex), Nicole Wyatt Holland (Heath), Lucas Wyatt (Tobi Jane Voan), Alethea Miller, Macey Miller, Raleigh Miller (Cynthia), Taylor Miller (Gracie); Great grandchildren: Charlie, Gunnar, Bear, Sonny, Katie, Kylie Rodgers, Madeline Holland Johnson (Isaac), Mylo and Moss Holland, Dove Miller, Michael and Tony Brown; along with many nieces and nephews.
Graveside service for Jerry will be 10:00 am Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane.

Norma Hederick Morreale
Norma J. (Hederick) Morreale, 85, of Hudson, MA, died on Thursday, March 13, 2025 peacefully with her loving family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years Richard J. Morreale (2014). She resided in Hudson since 1972.
Norma was born in Buffalo, West Virginia, daughter of the late Mac and Margaret (Hott) Hederick. She attended local schools and was a 1957 graduate of Buffalo High School. She was a member of the high school band and played trumpet. She then attended Gale Airline School. Before her retirement, Norma was employed by the Embassy Suites Hotel in Marlboro, MA.
Norma is survived by her daughter Cheryl Leeber and her husband Carl Leeber of Clinton MA, her late daughter Brenda Morreale of Stow, MA (2013), her grandchildren Victoria Budge Remain and her husband Zac Remain of New York, Nicole Budge of Maine, Rebecca Chaves and the late Dylan Chaves (2024) of Sturbridge, Rose and Joseph Leeber of Clinton MA and predeceased by her granddaughter Hope Ann Budge (1988). She also has great-grandchildren Aubrey, Zac, Ethyn, Zoey, Bree, Natalie, and Elliot. Norma is survived by her brothers and sisters, Anna May King of West Virginia, Geroge and the late Lee Hedrick (2012) of West Virginia, Edward and the late Peggy Hedrick (2015) of Massachusetts, David and his wife Priscilla of Virginia, Carol and Marty Hedrick of Florida and Carolyn Hedrick of West Virginia. She is preceded in death by her brother Mac Hedrick Jr (1964) and her brother Danny (2000) and his late wife Kathy Hedrick (2023) of Missouri.
Norma had many hobbies and interests which included being outdoors, planting and gardening. She was an avid sports fan of the Celtics, New England Patriots, and the Red Sox. She would have made a great play-by-play commentator. She loved games shows, puzzles, and cards. Most of all she enjoyed being a mom and a grandmother to all of us, creating delicious Sunday meals for her family and making her famous spaghetti and meatballs. She was a VERY hard worker and had amazing work ethics. She will be sorely missed.
Celebration of Norma’s life was Friday, March 21, 2025 at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Regional Home, Hudson, MA.

Roderic ‘Rod’ Nicholson
Roderic F. Nicholson, 72, of Eleanor, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2024 at CAMC Memorial following a long illness. He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Shalom Baptist Church.
Born September 24, 1952, he was the son of the late Roderic Nicholson Sr. and Vera Nicholson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Clyde Nicholson.
Survivors include his loving wife, Sandy Nicholson; daughter, Angie Childs of South Carolina; stepsons, Rick (Beth) Keen of Hurricane and Jay (Rachel) Keen of Red House; grandchildren, Stephen Childs, Dayla Childs, Ray (Shyanne) Keen, Katie Keen and Olivia Keen; great grandson, Jameson. Rod is also survived by his sister-in-law, Karen Nicholson, extended family, church family and many friends.
Funeral service was Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at Raynes Funeral Home, Eleanor, with Pastor Bernie Gatens and Pastor Frank Lawson officiating. Burial was in Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar.

Ginger Saunders
Ginger Leigh Saunders, 54, of Hurricane, passed away on March 9, 2025, three weeks after a sudden and unexpected medical emergency. She was born June 3, 1970 in Charleston. She was a life-long resident of Hurricane.
Ginger was a 1988 graduate of Hurricane High School. She enjoyed following the Redskins and loved helping the local teams with their orders at Hurricane Trophy. Ginger loved the beach and spending time by her pool soaking in the sunshine. She was a self-proclaimed homebody but enjoyed playing Yahtzee with her best friend every weekend.
If you met Ginger you couldn’t help but love her. She had such a good heart and was loved by so many, especially her family; she would do anything for anyone; but she was also a strong woman who stood up for herself and others with such passion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Saunders.
Ginger is survived by her two daughters, Madison and Macy Saunders who she loved beyond measure; parents, Richard and Sue Johnson, sister, Kim Salmons (Bill), brother Andy Johnson (Jennifer); sister-in-law Jane Saunders; nieces, Emily Hudson, Abigail Hudson, Jozee Johnson, Jenna Johnson & Ashlee Johnson; nephew, Andrew Johnson; her very best friend, Carrie Chaffin; her beloved beagle Woodstock and grand pup, Indigo,who knew her as GiGi.
Memorial service was Saturday, March 15 at Forrest Burdette United Methodist Church

Gary Lee Smith, Sr.
Gary Lee Smith Sr., 80 of Poca, went home to be with the Lord on March 14, 2025.
He was born on December 31, 1944, in Ironton, Ohio, to the late Claxton F. Smith Sr and Dorthy E. Smith.
Gary is preceded in death his loving wife Joyce F. Smith, grandson Eric M. Davis; brother Claxton F. Smith Jr; sisters Marilyn S. Roberts and Pamela K. Smith.
He is survived by his brother Keith (Pam) Smith of Hurricane, brothers-in-law Brad (Sue) Harbour of Red House and Houston Roberts of Winfield, sister-in-law Patsy Smith of Hurricane, daughter Robin L. Davis of Poca, son Gary (Marian) Smith Jr. of Hurricane, daughter Kimberly D. Smith of Poca and daughter Nikie (Matthew) Rider of Winfield, grandchildren, Ralph W. Davis, Kayla (Brandon) Hickman, Blain (Alex) Lewis, Dakota (fiancé’ Sara Ashworth and her son Carson) Rider, Jaedyn Rider and Weston Smith, great grandchildren Gracin, Ellie and Amin Hickman, Noah Davis, Hudson and Parker Lewis and a host of nieces and nephews.
Gary retired from Smith Concrete in Poca where he dedicated his life working as a manager and day-to-day operations for the family business until his retirement. He still played an active role in the day-to-day operations for several years. He is also a member of Poca Baptist Church.
