A Kid Zone featuring inflatables and indoor playground equipment was set up inside the old fire station for the festival.
Hurricane’s Spring Festival was held in a new venue this year: the old Hurricane Fire Department building on Main Street. Last Saturday, May 3, threatened rain, the decision was made to turn the annual event into an inside one. This is the first time that the facility has been utilized for a festival, although it was used for a spooky haunted house during last year’s Main Street Trick or Treat event. In years past, the spring festival has been cancelled in instances of inclement weather, but relocating it into the old fire station allowed the event to proceed when the skies poured the rain.
As part of the main entertainment, Guyan River Cloggers of Lincoln County performed several lively dances to exhilarating music, and even invited the children in the audience to participate in one of the songs. Andy McKey of Zoology Zone introduced audiences to Noah the Boa and Cookies and Cream the Argentine black and white tegu, two of the rescue reptiles hosted by Zoology Zone. McKey, who is a science teacher at Teays Valley Christian School, also performed several science experiments, including creating a cloud inside a bottle and showing how a paper cup filled with water does not burn while an empty paper cup will.
The spring festival featured twenty-five local craft vendors, as well as free ice cream by Lickity Scoops. There was a special KidZone set up for children five and under, as well as carnival games and free cotton candy.
This year’s event was sponsored by Family Wealth Group, Best Virginia, Cardinal Chevrolet, O’Dell Orthodonitc and Creative Pediatric Dentistry, Putnam County Bank, and Caldwell Insurance, and presented by Electronic Services, Inc.
