The Gun Club Youth Day produces many first-of-a-lifetime experiences.
The Putnam County Gun Club Youth Day is special for many because the day marks the first time in which they handled and used a firearm. Saturday, May 31st was special for approximately 25% of the 11 to 18 year-olds who participated in the gun club’s annual event at the shooting range in Eleanor.
B.J. Miller, vice president of the club and acting director for the event, said that close to sixty volunteers made the event happen. This year’s event consisted of sling shot, archery, and air rifle activities in addition to 3-position small bore, lever action rifle, speed shooting, and skeet shooting firearm activities.
All participants receive eye and ear protection and undergo safety orientation training before participating in the events. All use of firearms is supervised by certified instructors.
Participants also receive free t-shirts and are eligible for door prizes. The free-bees were made possible by event sponsors. This year’s sponsors include the National Rifle Association, West Virginia Department of Natural Resources, Putnam County Bank, E.J. Thompson & Son, Randolph Engineering, Spring Hill Rod & Gun, and West Virginia Bow Hunters.
Miller said that this year’s event was moved from late summer to the beginning of the summer season in a move to increase turnout over the 140 participants in 2024. The club began preparations in February with a goal of increasing participation to 300. The turnout for the shift in date fell far short of expectations.
