He was born November 3, 1934, in Putnam County, where he lived the early part of his life. He was a 1953 graduate of Poca High School. He met his wife, Lorraine Martin Parr, while performing as a clown in a tumbling act for the school. During their courtship he went into the Army and served two years. It was at this time that his life profoundly changed. He asked Jesus to be his Lord and Saviour on the top bunk in his barracks after being given a New Testament by the Gideons.

Their son, Rik, was born in 1958. The Lord led Richard through a series of jobs until he started his own insurance agency in 1974. Father and son worked together for over 35 years serving the people of Cross Lanes.
Richard’s true passion was the Bible. He studied daily for the rest of his life. He taught Sunday School at Community Chapel Church for many years. As a member of the Gideons International he handed out thousands of Bibles in area hotels and schools. In later years, he visited various churches throughout our state sharing his testimony.
Preceding him in death was his wife of 54 years, Lorraine Martin Parr and his parents Nellie and Leodus McCormick.
Left to mourn his passing are his son Rik Parr and wife Martha, and the joy of his life, his grandson Seth. He will also be missed by girlfriend Judi Escue and her daughter Brandace Kinder, and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
