Groundbreaking for New Dollar General

Excavation commenced just four days after the land purchase.

The excavation that commenced adjacent to Whitt’s Farm Supply on Main Street in Hurricane on Monday, October 6, has received a lot of attention. That attention prompted Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards to post on his Facebook page on October 12 that “Dirt is moving just off Main Street in Hurricane beside Whitt’s Farm Supply in preparation for a new DG Market.” Edwards further stated that the land was sold from a private, local owner to a development company that is choosing to put in a DG Market. “The city didn’t ‘choose’ for this to occur. The purchaser made a business decision to build a DG Market in an effort to make the most return for their investors which was based on many factors, including traffic counts, new housing and expected growth.”

The deed, transferring ownership from MAT Equities LLC and Robert T. Meeks to DG BTS Hurricane LLC for the 2.8 acres upon which the Dollar General will be constructed, was recorded by the Putnam County Clerk on Thursday, October 2nd. The span of just four days between purchase and site preparation is misleadingly sudden because plans for the 2530 Main Street location have been known for since April. At the April 7 city council meeting, council approved a zoning change from Residential to B-3. Plans for the Dollar General were announced at that time.

Thor Meeks made application for the zoning change early this year and a legal notice advising the public of the request was published in the Breeze on February 13.

According to bizapedia.com, DG BTS Hurricane, LLC filed to come into existence on April 7, 2025. The company’s filing would have transpired hours before the B-3 zoning was approved. Bizapedia reports that the Registered Agent on file for DG BTS Hurricane LLC is National Registered Agents, Inc., located at 5098 Washington Street Suite 407, Charleston, and its principal address is 2525 Broad Street Suite 103, Chattanooga, TN, with a mailing address is 2525 Broad Street Suite 103, Chattanooga, TN 37408. The company contacts are Michael P. Berry from Chattanooga TN and Ward W. Nelson from Chattanooga TN.

Putnam County Clerk records list the transfer as a $330,000 transaction. SouthWest Bank of Tennessee is the lending institution.
