City of Hurricane/ZoneOut Sports Partnership: Free Open Gym for 1st – 5th Graders

A basketball pickup game in progress at the ZoneOut Sports gym.

Basketball pickup games and skill development were both on display at ZoneOut Sports in Hurricane on Saturday, November 8. The free open gym, sponsored by the City of Hurricane, began in 2021 as a gift to 1st – 5th graders throughout the county. Free time is between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays. The first free open gym was Saturday, November 1st. Free time ends on the last Saturday in March.

Mayor Scott Edwards said, “We at the City of Hurricane are excited to offer this weekly free open gym again this year. We think it’s a great opportunity to keep kids active during the colder months, maybe introduce them to basketball for the first time — or just have some fun on Saturday mornings! We appreciate Adam Zimmerman at ZoneOut for working with us to make this happen, and it’s not only for Hurricane kids, but open to 1st-5th graders who live anywhere in Putnam County!”

Dads use the Open Gym to work with sons on skill development.
