DAISY MAE BACKUS
Daisy Mae Backus 91, of Fraziers Bottom, passed away on January 5, 2026.
She was born to the late Avner and Madeline (Neal) Backus on September 29, 1934 in Nicholas County. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Robert Backus; and sister, Ruby Elkins.
Daisy is survived by her daughter, Pamela and husband, Jeff Jones of Fraziers Bottom; sister, Annie Cole of Chimney Corners; and special cousin, Debbie Skyles of Charleston.
Per her wishes there will be no services.
DONNIE NELSON
Donnie R. Nelson peacefully went to be with the Lord on January 9, 2026, after a long illness. Born on November 29, 1948, in Hurricane, Donnie graduated from Hurricane High School in 1966 and dedicated 22 years of service to the U.S. Navy. After his military career, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was a devoted member of the First Church of God in Hurricane. He found joy in woodworking and gardening, passions that reflected his love for creating and nurturing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Martha Nelson, and his brothers Lloyd (Sandy) Nelson and Steven (Karen) Nelson.
Donnie is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Janet L Nelson; his brothers Kelly Gene Nelson of Hurricane, Paul (Debbie) Nelson of Crystal River, FL, and Ronnie (Tami) Nelson of St. Augustine, FL. He is also remembered by his sisters-in-law Susan (Dave) Hunsinger of Tallahassee, FL, Pat (Bob) Kilburn of New Johnsonville, TN; brothers-in-law Butch Mesick of Keystone Heights, FL, and Paul Mesick of Arden, NC; many nieces and nephews; and two adopted granddaughters, Jayme Green of Huntington, and Abby Tucker of Buffalo.
Donnie will be remembered as a loving husband, uncle, and papaw.
Funeral service was Monday, January 12, 2026, at Allen Funeral Home, with Pastor Harold Richards officiating. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Milton.
DARRELL RAPPOLD
Darrell Keith Rappold, 62, died at Putnam Center in Hurricane on January 10, 2026, after a long illness. He was born on November 9, 1963 in Charleston, to Darrell Gene Rappold and Joyce Lee Rappold and has been a lifelong resident of Hurricane.
A graduate of Hurricane High School Class of 1982, Keith had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back. During his younger, healthier years you could find him in the gym lifting weights and hanging out with his friends. He was the fun uncle and earned the title of “Uncle Buck,” which stuck with him throughout his life. As his health declined, he was always appreciative of the assistance he received through his caregivers and medical team. He loved to talk to his family and friends on the phone. He had just gotten his first iPad and was learning to FaceTime so he could see those he was talking with. He was always ready to tell a story, share a memory, and make you laugh. Though he was named Darrell after his dad he always said he knew when “his people” were calling because they knew him only as “Keith.”
He is survived by: sister and brother-in-law, Sherri and Jerry Kreps of Lincoln, NE; brother and sister-in-law, Kevin and Shelia Rappold of Scott Depot; sister and brother-in-law Tina and Antony Roberts of Dublin, OH; nieces/nephews: Lakan Rappold of Hurricane; Christian (Leah) Hale of Spring Hill, TN; Collin Roberts and Abby Roberts of Dublin, OH; Jordan Kreps of Lincoln, NE; ZacharyRappold of Hamlin; and Garrett Rappold of Scott Depot; great nephews Wesley and Wyatt Sowardsof Hurricane; and Weston Hale of Spring Hill, TN.
He is preceded in death by his parents Darrell G. and Joyce Rappold, grandparents Clyde and Ruby Rappold, and Charles Lee and Bernice Hammack.
Keith will be cremated and a memorial service announced at a later date.
JANET DELORIS SLAWTER
Janet Deloris Slawter, 91, of Hurricane, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
She was born on February 24, 1934 in Boone County, to the late Norvel and Betsey Snead.
Janet enjoyed playing the piano and working outside in her flowers. She was a member of the St. Albans United Pentecostal Church for over 50 years. In addition to helping with many events with the ladies auxiliary she taught Sunday School, played piano and the organ for the church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Earl Slawter; and daughter-in-law, Betty Slawter.
Janet is survived by her three sons, Robert of Hurricane, Douglas of Calhoun GA, and Walter (Bethany) of Hurricane; four granddaughters, Macee, Bralee, Camree, Carlee, one great grandson, Kasai; and a great granddaughter due in March.
A graveside service was Sunday, January 11, at Teays Hills Cemetery, St. Albans.
CHARLES LEE WARNER
Charles Lee Warner, 82, of Hurricane, formerly of Sistersville, passed away on January 6, 2026 at CAMC TV.
Charles was born to the late Lee A. and Evelyn L. Parsons Warner on July 20, 1943 in Charleston. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his nephew, Matt Warner.
He was a 1961 graduate of South Charleston High School as well as a 1973 graduate of WVIT with a Mechanical and Civil Engineering degree, later he proudly served his country in the WVANG 130th earning the rank of Maj. upon retirement. Charles was a member, former deacon and Sunday School Teacher at First Baptist Church of Sistersville and attended Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church in Hurricane. He was also a member of Tau Beta Pi, WV Beta an honorary Engineering Fraternity, and the National Rifle Association.
Charles is survived by his former spouse and business partner, Jennifer Naylor Warner of Sistersville; sons: Samuel B. Warner of Concord, NC and Curtis L. Warner of Scott Depot; grandchildren: Caroline Warner, Ava Warner, and Samuel Warner; brother, Jim Warner (Mary Ann) of Milton; sister, Jan Warner Ramey (Scott) of Hurricane; sisters in-law: Catherine Naylor and Stephanie Naylor Burks (John); nieces: Kim Warner Davidson, Reese and Rylee Ramey, Jamie Ann Warner, Eryn Gibson Legg, Leah Wallace, Whitney Naylor-Smith, and Jennifer Ann Burks; and nephews: Daniel Murphy and Matt Smith.
Visitation was Sunday, January 11, 2026, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane. Charles will be buried at a later date on the family farm, Shiloh, in Friendly, WV.
LOLA ANNE WARREN
Lola Anne Warren, of Culloden, passed away on January 8, 2026, just minutes into her 93rd birthday.
She was born in Weston, West Virginia, on January 8, 1933, the daughter of the late J. Harley Boram and Sue S. Boram. She graduated with high honors from Weston High School in 1950 and continued her education at Mountain State College in Parkersburg, where she was recognized as “The Secretary of Tomorrow.”
On April 19, 1952, she married Walter H. “Huppy” Warren, Jr., who preceded her in death in 2006. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Charleston, where Lola worked as a legal secretary and later served on the staff of the West Virginia State Senate during legislative sessions.
In 1967, the family moved to Culloden, where Lola and her husband became owners of Highland Insurance in Huntington.
Lola was preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law, Marianne Warren Monk and David Monk; her brothers, Dr. William Boram and wife JoAnn, and Thomas Boram and wife Marie; her sisters, Dorothy Burkhammer and husband Frank, and Linda McColgan and husband Jerry; and her beloved niece, Bonnie Coleman.
She is survived by two sons, Walter H. Warren III and wife Sue-Beth of Wheeling and Stuart P. Warren and wife Carla of Winfield. Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, and several dear nieces and nephews. She is also survived by special friends Nancy Hunter, Marcy Stowers, and Jesse Wilburn.
Lola was an avid reader and a devoted player of bridge and Scrabble. She loved grammar, poetry, and the written word, held a deep interest in social justice, and treasured lively family gatherings filled with conversation, food, and laughter. She enjoyed sharing that she, her sister Linda, and her oldest grandson Chris Chapman were all winners of the West Virginia Golden Horseshoe.
She was a devoted member of St. Timothy’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church in Hurricane where she served faithfully in many roles over the years.
Funeral service was Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at St. Timothy’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church with Father Andy Bird officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.
