Dramatic Crash Closes I-64

On Tuesday, June 1, the Hurricane Fire & Rescue, Putnam County EMS and Hurricane Police Department responded to a multi-vehicle accident near the I-64 eastbound rest area in Hurricane.

The first unit on the accident scene found five vehicles (three passenger cars and two commercial vehicles) and six injured individuals. One accident victim succumbed to injuries on the scene. Four additional patients were transported to area hospitals by PCEMS. One accident victim refused treatment. One of the injured had to be freed from the twisted remains of his vehicle with hydraulic rescue tools.

A large amount of diesel fuel and some gasoline was spilled on the roadway causing the interstate was closed for an extended period of time for clean up and removal of accident debris. Traffic was curtailed for more than three hours.

Teays Valley and Nitro Fire Departments were also on the scene along with Putnam County Sheriff, WV State Police, Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement, WV Division of Highways and Hurricane Wrecker.
