Centennial History of Hurricane: Meet Some of Hurricane’s Oldest Families

In 1988, The Centennial History of Hurricane, WV was published to commemorate the town’s 100th anniversary. Since the Centennial History is now out of print, the Breeze is reprinting articles from the book as space allows. This week’s selection will be the 214th installment of the Centennial History.

La Fayette Spurgeon Sovine was born in the Hurricane area in 1876. He, his Mother Arminta and Father Pleasant lived together with his three brothers and four sisters in Hurricane until he was a young adult. At this time he married Zada Moore and moved to Fayette County where he lived until his death in 1931.

Of all their eight children only one resides in Hurricane. His daughter Beulah moved with her husband Oran McCallister to 205 Irene Circle in 1974, after his retirement from Union Carbide at Institute. They are the parents of two daughters who also reside in Hurricane. Oran and Beulah have six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Jo Ann lives with her husband Raymond Robertson at 220 Forest Road. They have one daughter, Jill, who lives with her husband Timothy Grant in Pinebluff, North Carolina. Jill is a clinical psychologist for the North Carolina Department of Correction. Her husband is a youth director for the State of North Carolina.

Their other daughter, Janet, moved to Thompson Heights, Hurricane in 1958 with her husband Kenneth Fisher, where they still reside. At that time they had three sons, Fred 5 years, Jonathan 2 years and Joe 7 months. Later two more sons were born to the Fishers, Tom in 1961 and Jeff in 1965. Fred Fisher resides on Harbour Lane with his wife, the former Carolyn Beason of Hayward, California, and their daughter, Natalie. Natalie is now a student at Hurricane Town Elementary.

Jonathan is married to the former Penny Summers of Winfield. They live at 5668 Rt. 34, Winfield with their son Jonathan Scott II. Jon and Penny are teachers at Hurricane Middle School.

Joe is married to Teresa Higginbothom of Teays Valley. They have two sons, Timothy and Stephen. Joe is employed by the Putnam County Board of Education.

In August, Tom, who is a salesman at Lowes of Teays Valley, married Mary Jo Lincolnogger. They live at 9351 Rt. 34, Winfield. Mary Jo is a student at WV State College. Jeff is single and employed in the Hurricane area. He lives at home with his parents.

Beulah and Oran have had grandchildren in the Hurricane School system since 1959.
