Joseph Mcgranahan, 39, of Ashland, Kentucky, was arrested by Sergeant R Poe and Patrolman J Rakes on Monday, January 24, in an attempted robbery at the Walgreens in Hurricane.
Mcgranahan entered the store just after 9:30 a.m. and proceeded to the pharmacy where he demanded OxyContin Xanax pills.
Mayor Scott Edwards reported that Mcgranahan has been charged with armed robbery because he presented a note threatening to shoot if employees did not comply with his demand. He also picked up a pill counter and used it as a threatening weapon.
Mcgranahan was apprehended by the officers as he was exiting the store. Edwards said the first officer arrived 60 to 90 seconds after the HPD received the call.
Mcgranahan is also being charged with assault on a police officer and assault upon four Walgreen employees.
He is now housed at the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville.
