Cpl. William B. Fulks Memorial Race Funds Scholarship

More than 50 participants, ranging in age from 10 to 62, ran/walked in the Cpl. William B. Fulks Memorial 5K/10K Run, Walk & Ruck Race held Saturday, May 14, on the Meeks Mountain Trails at Hurricane City Park.

This trail event is an annual tribute to Cpl. William B. Fulks who was wounded while conducting combat operations in Anbar Province, Iraq, on May 1, 2006. Cpl. Fulks suffered second and third degree burns in addition to internal injuries when an IED (improvised explosive device) detonated beneath his Humvee near Fallujah. He succumbed to his wounds on Thursday, May 18, 2006 – just three days after his 23rd birthday. Cpl. Fulks was a member of the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. He grew up in Milton and attended Cabell Midland High School and Marshall University.

The proceeds from the race help fund a scholarship in honor of Cpl. Fulks. Proceeds also support the mission of Marine Corps League Detachment #1474 in its pursuit of service to veterans of our community.
