Centennial History of Hurricane (1994 Edition): The Duke Family

In 1988, The Centennial History of Hurricane, WV was published to commemorate the town’s 100th anniversary. In 1994, the Centennial Committee published a follow up book which included family histories which were not submitted in time for the 1988 Centennial History. This week’s selection is the 7th history from The Centennial History of Hurricane WV Continued — 1994.

JAMES DUKE

James Duke was born about 1783 in Pennsylvania and died in 1867 in Missouri. He was married to Elizabeth Lephart who was born about 1790 in Pennsylvania and died October 29, 1867 in Missouri. They settled in Mason County (now a part of Putnam County) in 1829.

On November 16, 1836, a land grant for 185 acres on Charlies Creek, the east branch of Mud River and Panther Lick Branch in Cabell County, Virginia was issued to James Duke. It was signed by David Campbell, Esquire, Governor of Commonwealth Virginia in Richmond.

They lived there until 1856, when they accompanied a daughter, Hannah Reed to Missouri. James and Elizabeth Duke were parents of George Washington Duke. ne 1850 Putnam County census lists a child, Ann E. Duke, age 5, born in Virginia and resided with them.

George Washington Duke was born May 26, 1817 in Augusta County, Virginia and died July 11, 1895 in Hurricane, WV. On February 14, 1843 in Kanawha County, Virginia (now WV), he married Mary Hicken Ellis who was born November 6, 1820 in Kanawha County, Virginia, a daughter of Hiram and Jane (Tackett) Ellis.

On April 25, 1849, a land grant for 92 acres located on Panther Lick Creek, Putnam County, Virginia was issued to George Washington Duke. It was siP1ed by Joseph Johnson, Esquire, Governor of Commonwealth Virginia. In 1868, George Duke built a house on Panther Lick which stands today. Marie (Janey) Duke, wife of George’s grandson, Alvin Sherman Duke, resides in the house.

George and Mary Duke were parents of Creed, Elizabeth Jane, Columbus, Nathaniel Vincent, John, Aurilla Wood, Alvin Hargis, James Madison, Sarah Frances, Mary Margaret and Charles Jackson Duke.

Creed was born October 4, 1843 and died November 11, 1847.

Elizabeth Jane was born September 18, 1845.

Christopher Columbus was born May 13, 1847.

Nathaniel Vincent was born March 13, 1849. He resided is St. Louis, Missouri.

John was born March 7, 1853. He resided in Howell County, Missouri.

Aurilla Wood was born June 27, 1854 and married Joe Burton. She resided in Lincoln County, WV. They were parents of George, Brod and Ida Sabie Burton.

Alvin Hargriss was born March 2, 1856. He resided in Lincoln County, WV. He married Mary Ann Powell. They were parents of Emma Mabelle, James Russell, Arena Maude and Lula Jewell Duke.

James Madison was born January 20, 1858. He married Laura Powell. They were parents of LaVora Wilson, John W., Effie Blanche, Esther, Nancy Vleera, Charles Grover, and Ethel Duke.

Sarah Frances was born June 5, 1860. She married Henry Clinton Thompson. They were parents of Heber Rufus and Marie Jean Thompson.

Mary Margaret was born October 5, 1861 and married Harry Wyant. They had one child, Goldie Wyant.

Charles Jackson was born August 6, 1864 in Putnam County, WV. He married Jettie Hughes on June 22, 1890. He died July 30, 1943 in Hurricane. They were parents of Homer Ralph, William Brady, Howard Wilson, Nyra, and Alvin Sherman Duke.
