Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards announced that Santa’s mailbox is now open.

On Monday, Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards posted a video on Facebook in which he announced that a special post office box has been set up at the gazebo on Main Street for letters to Santa.

The Mayor said that the box will be removed at midnight on December 11. Mayor Edwards emphasized that all letters must include a stamped, self-addressed envelop. “Santa’s elves will not be able to answer the letter without,” he said.

Edwards also announced that Saturday, December 10, was going to be a big day in Hurricane. The Christmas parade will be at 4:00 p.m. The Hurricane Civic Choir will be performing at the gazebo from 3:30-4:00 p.m. and there will be a free ornament making workshop at My Messy Desk on Dudding Avenue.

The Mayor suggested arriving early to listen to the choir, make an ornament, and, after the parade, getting a photo with Santa at the gazebo.

Other upcoming Christmas activities in Hurricane include the Main Street Snowman Contest. There are 13 sponsored snowmen, all located between Putnam County Bank and Belknap Dough Company. Members of the public is invited to write the number of their favorite on a paper and deposit their ballots in the ballot box inside the gazebo. Votes will be counted on December 18. The favorite charity of the winning snowman’s sponsor will be the recipient of a donation. Competing sponsors are: Four Seasons Salon WV, Putnam County Bank, Putnam County Library, O’Dell Orthodontics, PrimeLending, WV Chiropractic, Farmers Bank, Bear Wood Company, Belknap Dough Company, Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, Valley Park, WV, Community Autism Resources & Education Systems- CARES and Children First LLC.

The City of Hurricane is sponsoring its annual Christmas House Decorating Contest. The contest is limited to homes within city limits. Residents must enter no later than December 18. Online entry can be made on the web by going to: hurricanewv.com/christmascontest.
