In 1988, The Centennial History of Hurricane, WV was published to commemorate the town’s 100th anniversary. In 1994, the Centennial Committee published a follow up book which included family histories which were not submitted in time for the 1988 Centennial History. This week’s selection is the 45th history from The Centennial History of Hurricane WV Continued — 1994.

BILLY JOE & PAULINE W. SUNDERLAND

Billy Joe & Pauline W. Sunderland moved to Sunset Heights in Hurricane, with their two daughters, Phoebe Jo (5-6-53), and Polly Jane (7-5-55), in August, 1959 from Milton WV.
BiJly Joe, son of the late Alfred Sunderland and Ruth Marie Martin Sunderland, was raised in Cabell County and is a 1947 graduate of Milton High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1952 and served in the Koren War. B. J. retired from Union Carbide with 38 1/2 years of service in July 1986. He is a member of Putnam Masonic Lodge #139.

Billy Joe’s mother, Ruth Marie, is the daughter of the late Charles W. and Sara Jane Erwin Martin. Charles W. came to Hurricane (Sleepy Creek area) from Roanoke VA, and married Sara Jane Erwin.

Billy Joe’s father, Alfred, was the son of John H. and Annie Laura Janey Sunderland, John’s parents, Patrick and Charlotte Woodland Sunderland, settled in Cabell Co. from Sunderland, England.

Pauline, youngest daughter of the late Ira Clevland & Mary Harte Wolfe White, was raised in Culloden, WV and is a 1948 graduate of Milton High School.

Pauline’s mother, Mary Harte Wolfe White, was the daughter of Daniel Boone and Emma America Wolfe, from Meigs Co., Ohio. Daniel’s father, Geo Washington Wolfe was born in Germany. His mother was Mary A. Bell. Pauline’s father, Ira C. White, was the son of John William & Alberta Jarrell White. They came to this area from Culpepper, VA.

Pauline (Pooch) worked as a secretary for Putnam County Schools for 25 years, starting at Hurricane Elementary School, transferred to the new Hurricane High School when it opened in the Fall of 1970, then to the county office as secretary of Adult & Community Education, retiring in Dec. 1988. She has been active in P.T.A. organizations, Hurricane #116 order of Eastern Star, and now active in the Hurricane Civic Chorus.

Billy Joe & Pauline are active members of the Milton United Methodist Church.

Their daughter Phoebe Jo was an honor graduate of Hurricane High School and Glenville State College. She married Michael Delm Truex of St. Marys, WV, August 4, 1974. Michael is a graduate of St. Marys High School and Glenville State College. They reside in Denver, Colorado with their daughter, Micah Danielle (2-12-91).

Polly Jane married Richard “Dick” Arbaugh of Alderson, WV May 27, 1983. Polly is an honor graduate of Hurricane High School and Glenville State College. Richard is a graduate of Alderson High School. They reside in Nettie (Nicholas Co.), with their son Joshua Cole (10-5-87).
