Cpl. Fulks Memorial 5K & 10K — A Message and A Mission

Both 5K and 10K competitors start together at the Annual Cpl. Fulks Memorial Run at Meeks Mountain Trails in Hurricane on June 3rd.

The 3rd Annual Cpl. Fulks Memorial 5K & 10K brought runners, walkers, event sponsors, members of Marine Corps League Detachment #1474, Boy Scout Troop 236, and the mother and father of Cpl. William Bradley Fulks to Meeks Mountain Trails at Hurricane City Park on Saturday, June 3.

All were on a mission and all delivered a message — some a message of caring, others a message of resolve or of fulfillment. The mission and the message are one and the same for members of Detachment #1474 because it is the mission of the Marine Corps League to support all veterans and their families.

The event helps fund the detachment’s scholarship program. This year, the detachment honored the memory of Cpl. Fulks by presenting a one thousand dollar scholarship to Bethany Hinkle, a graduate of Cabell Midland High School. Cpl. Fulks died from wounds incurred in Iraq in 2006.

In addition to sending a message of caring, 5K and 10K participants are on a mission of meeting personal performance goals. Reese Arey met her goals by finishing first overall in the 5K, beating out first place male finisher Jacob Meddings by one tenth of a second.

First, second and third place finishers all received plaques bearing the image of the Marine Corps mascot.

Male 5K winners were Jacob Meddings, Wylie Faw, and Dylan Sands.

Female 5K winners were Reese Arey, Emma Johnson, and Vikki Faw.

Male 10K winners were Sherwin Miller, Michael Louk, and Rob Robertson.

Female 10K winners were Nicole Michaels, Michele Monn, and Erin Paxton.

Trey Turley was 5K Ruck winner with a time of 39:32.5.
