Independence Day is a big day for Hurricane, extending from 2:45 p.m. to well-past 10:30 p.m. Lineup for the annual Independence Day Parade will be from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at lower Bridge Park on Midland Trail. At 2:45, there will be a pre-parade fun event on Main Street in which Mitch Fitzgerald will attempt to pull a 40,000-lbs. fire truck in front of Putnam County Bank. The parade starts at 3 p.m. and will proceed along Midland Trail to Main Street and terminate at Hurricane First Baptist Church.

Activities will follow at the Putnam County Bank Sports Complex at Bridge Park (located on hilltop behind First Baptist Church). There will be a shuttle bus running between the Midland Trail section of Bridge Park and the PCB Sports Complex. Festivities will open at 4 p.m. The celebration will feature lots of giveaways with free ice cream, cotton candy, Sno Cones, t-shirt giveaways, and water melon served by members of City Council. There will be food trucks on hand to supplement offerings at the PCB Complex concession stand. There will be fun for youngsters with inflatables, water slides, a petting zoo, yard games, balloon twisting, magic show and much more.

At 6:30 p.m., contestants in the annual Farley’s Hot Dog Eating Contest will have five minutes to eat as many hot dogs as they can. Price money is 1st – $500, 2nd – $250, and 3rd – $100. A trophy from Hurricane Trophy will be presented to the winner in the name of the late Matt Leary who kicked off the annual eating contest.

Rewind the Walkman will be performing from 8:15 to 9:45 p.m. The group treated a large audience at last year’s Independence Day celebration to music of the 80’s and 90’s.

Activities at Bridge Park will be followed by fireworks on Water Tank Ridge, opposite from Bridge Park at 10 p.m. The PCB Sports Complex is an excellent location from which to view the fireworks as rockets will be launched from Water Tank area. This year’s fireworks will be massive and Hurricane’ largest ever.
