Putnam Schools Student Assessment West Virginia’s Best

The West Virginia Department of Education released the 2023 student assessment results for all schools on Wednesday, August 9th. The numbers have Putnam registering the highest overall percent proficiency.

The DOE reported proficiencies in Math, Reading, and Science for every county. Putnam schools were Number One in Math and Reading, and second in Science. Statewide proficiencies were Math – 35%, Reading – 44%, and Science – 28%. Putnam’s respective proficiencies were 53%, 58%, and 39%. Monongalia County placed first in Science with a 42% proficiency.

Student assessments for individual schools in Putnam varied widely. West Teays Elementary registered a clean sweep of top proficiencies among the county’s elementary schools with 80.6% in Math, 73.6% in Reading, and 61.5% in Science.

Winfield edged out Hurricane for best middle school proficiencies. The highest in Math proficiency was Hurricane Middle. Winfield Middle was tops in Reading and George Washington Middle achieved the highest Science proficiencies.

Winfield High School had the highest proficiencies in all three areas. Winfield’s Math proficiency was 50.3%, 71.0% in Reading and 51.1% in Science.
