Putnam seniors were swing to the tunes of the 1950’s at Putnam Aging Program’s annual picnic.
The Putnam County Aging Program held its annual Putnam County Senior Picnic on Thursday, August 10, at Valley Park in Hurricane. The event featured interactive booths with close to forty social service vendors sharing information about the services to seniors which they provide in the Putnam County area. Around ten of the vendors were first-time participants at the event.
The theme was “The Fifties” and included a visit from Sandy and Danny of Grease fame. Putnam Aging Program Executive Director Jenni Sutherland said that Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta were not available to attend so Karen Carter and Tommie Atkinson (both Putnam Aging employees) stood in as Sandy and Danny.
It was a day of rocking and rolling 1950’s style with a number of seniors donning Poodle Skirts, cat glasses, polka dots, ponytails, and bobby socks. Dancing, candy cigarettes, and root beer floats were the order of the day as DJ Neil Thunder played hits from that era.
Seniors from the Buffalo, Hometown, and Hurricane Senior Centers were treated to a Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, and green bean TV dinner and rolls and pineapple upside down cake. In total (including vendors and Putnam Aging personnel), there were more 250 in attendance.
