Trout Stocking Brings Anglers To Hurricane Reservoir

Caleb Gilkerson of Huntington poses with a rainbow trout which he caught on Thursday, January 11, at the Hurricane Reservoir on Teays Valley Road. Gilkerson’s visit to the reservoir was his second after learning that it had been stocked on January 4th. He estimates that his catch will weigh a full pound.

The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources stocked the Hurricane Reservoir on Thursday, January 4, with rainbow trout that were spawned in September of 2022. Eggs were hatched indoors and grown to fingerling size and moved outside after raceways and pools were emptied and sanitized following the 2023 spring stocking season. At the time of stocking, most trout are 1 1/2 years old and weigh three quarters of a pound.
