When Gary left the Marine Corps, he returned to WV where he supported his young family by working as a welder at Putnam Fabricating, pipefitter and logger before accepting a position with the Department of Defense where he finished his career as a boiler and elevator inspector. He and his family lived in Virginia, West Virginia and Florida, then while working with the Department of Defense, he and Betty lived and worked in Okinawa Japan.
