The West Virginia Department of Education released the 2024 student assessment results for all schools on Wednesday, August 14th. Statewide, there were slight gains in overall proficiency with increases over last year’s numbers in English language arts (ELA) (44% to 45%) and math (35% to 36%). Science proficiency remained unchanged at 29%. Early learners made the most significant gains in reading. The report showed progress in ELA with a 6% gain in third grade proficiency, and a 7% decrease in those who did not meet the standard compared to last year’s assessment.
The DOE website reported proficiencies in Math, Reading, and Science for every county. Putnam schools were Number One in Math and Reading, and third in Science. Putnam exceeded statewide proficiencies in Math, 55% to 36%; Reading, 61% to 45%; and Science, 41% to 29%. Putnam’s Science proficiency of 41% was exceeded by Ohio County with 47% and Monongalia County with 43% proficiencies. Putnam registered the highest overall proficiencies in Math, Reading and Science with an average proficiency of 52.3%. Ohio County was second with a 51.7% average and Monongalia was third with a 50.1% average.
Student assessments for individual schools within Putnam varied widely. West Teays Elementary registered the highest proficiencies among the county’s elementary schools with 81.6% best in Math, 82.1% best in Reading, and 56.4% third best in Science. Lakeside Elementary registered a county-wide best 60.9% proficiency in Science. Scott Teays Elementary was second in Science with a 58.8% proficiency.
Winfield and Hurricane registered the best middle school proficiencies in Math and Reading and the poorest in Science. Winfield was highest in Math with a 60% to Hurricane’s 55%. Hurricane Middle topped Winfield by a 61.4% to 61.0% margin in Reading proficiency. Poca Middle achieved the highest Science proficiency with 54%, followed by George Washington Middle with 49%. HMS and WMS Science proficiencies were 37% and 34%, respectively.
Winfield High School registered the highest proficiencies in all three academic areas. Winfield’s proficiencies were 36% in Math, 69% in Reading and 38% in Science.
