Ronald Lee Ford
Ronald Lee Ford, 68, of Scott Depot, passed away on September 17, 2024, in HospiceCare at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Charleston.
Ron was born on December 10, 1955, to the late Luther and Joyce (Bradshaw) Ford in Charleston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Isreal Ford; brother, David Ford and nephew, Grant Ford.
Ron was a dedicated operator/millwright at FMC for 23 years and continued his career at Greenwood, Bayer CropScience, and retired from Covestro in 2020. After retirement, he spent most of his time with his family and dog, Otey. Ron enjoyed the outdoors, boating, and collecting antiques.
He is survived by his companion, Sherry Fauber; brother, Gary (Karla) Ford; son, Corey (Jill) Ford; daughter, Lindsey (Jared) Chapman; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Graveside service for Ron was Sunday, September 22, 2024, at Cunningham Memorial Park with Pastor Aaron Finney officiating.
Shellie Gross
Shellie Lynn (Allen) Gross, 65, passed on September 19, surrounded by her family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Darrell and Wanda Allen, and brother-in-laws, David Morton and Phillip Gross.
Shellie retired from decades of work at Pro Eyes Optometry in 2020. She loved photography, traveling, and having a good time. She never met a person that was a stranger. She included everybody she could and made them feel special. She had a personality and sense of humor that could light up a room.
She is survived by her husband of 33 years, David. Children Ashley (Jason) Dempsey, Kayla (Andrew) Bethel, and Patrick (Erica Black) Gross. Sister Daryl Lene (Mark) Brown. Granddaughters Addilyn Gross, Ava, Peyton, and Madison Dempsey. Mother in law Barbara Gross. Brother in law Tim Gross and sister in law Joanna Morton. Her niece Hillary (Reid) Adams and Clark Brown. A huge group of friends who she loved so much. And her dog, Lucy.
Celebration of Life was Sunday, September 22, at Allen Funeral Home in Hurricane.
Mark Allen Lovejoy
Mark Allen Lovejoy, 58, of Culloden, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on September 16, 2024, after a long illness.
Mark was born June 3, 1966, in Huntington, to Linda L. Roach and the late Frankie M. Lovejoy.
He was happily married for 28 years, to the love of his life Pamela Kirwan Lovejoy. They were best friends that knew each other years prior to getting married and had many memories together. Mark and Pam have one child, Haley Oliver Diana Lovejoy, who quickly filled his heart with such joy and love. He relished every minute spent, every concert together, and all the nights spent watching movies or shows they both enjoyed. Spending time together meant the world to him.
Mark was a wonderful husband, father, brother, son and friend. He cared deeply for his family and friends. He made a living laying tile and most recently worked for Professional Floor & Wall of Scott Depot. He was a Christian and enjoyed handing out crosses to those he cared for.
Outside of family Mark enjoyed spending time watching his favorite football team — the Marshall Thundering Herd, wood working, the outdoors, gardening, and hanging out with his companion dog Morte.
Mark is survived by his wife, Pamela Lovejoy; daughter, Haley Oliver Diana Lovejoy; mother, Linda Roach; and sister, Angela Blackshire and her husband Todd.
At Mark’s request, there will be no services.
Hattie C. Mynes
Hattie C. Mynes, 80, of Winfield, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 16, 2024, at home surrounded by her closest family.
Hattie was born May 3, 1944 in Milton to the late Virgil and Goldie Boggs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 28 years, Virgil Mynes and her siblings: Faye, Dorothy, and Loretta.
Hattie was an active member of the community. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane and occasionally attended Teays Valley Church of God. She loved cheering on the Winfield Generals and working out at the YMCA. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her entire life to her family. Whether she was attending dance recitals, little league games or running car pool she was always with her family on the go. Hattie had an infectious upbeat personality. To know her was to love her.
She is survived by her loving life partner of 34 years, Bill Meadows; son, Mark Mynes and grandson Kyle Mynes; daughter, Lisa Cunningham (Joey), grandchildren: Jessica (Bruce), Parker, Ashlee (Justin), and Nicholas; great grandchildren: Hunter, Kendall, Maxwell, and Harrison; siblings: Carolyn McGhee (Bill) and David Boggs (Kathy).
Hattie’s last months of life were spent being cared for by her devoted daughter, Lisa. This time was deeply cherished and invaluable to those closest to Hattie.
Hattie’s funeral service was Friday, September 20, 2024, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Rev. Dr. Melissa Pratt officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
Bill Nutter
William “Bill” Nutter, 84, of Apple Grove, passed away on September 15, 2024 at his residence.
He was born on January 31, 1940 to the late Eugene H. and Ardath A. Phelps Nutter in Charleston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jim Nutter and sisters: Wanda Beddow and Betty Minnich.
Bill was a graduate of St. Albans High School, he proudly served his country in the US Air Force and was a truck driver. He was also a member of Mount Union Church in Pliny and enjoyed hunting.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Freda A. Morris Nutter; sons: Scott (Melissa) Nutter of Atlanta, GA and Craig (Trena) Nutter of St. Albans, WV; stepson: Teddy Workman of Pinch, WV; grandson: Craig A. (Christa) Nutter II; step grandson: Patrick Workman; great grandson: James A. Nutter and best friend: Randy Roberts of South Charleston, WV; as well as several nieces and nephews that he loved deeply.

Kevin Nelson Payne
Kevin Nelson Payne, 66, loving husband of Eydie Conner Payne, passed away September 18, 2024, at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Anyone that knew Kevin, knows he had the biggest heart and was always ready to lend a helping hand. He adored his family, always had an inquisitive mind, loved music, nature and the WVU Mountaineers.
Kevin was preceded in death by his parents: Nelson and Irene Payne; father-in-law: Roland; and his pups: Shilo and Rudy.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons: Nelson (Devon), Jarrod (Rebecca) and Joshua; grandchildren: Amelia, Tyler, Maycee, Eli, Hattie, and Holden; sisters: Dianne (Gary) and Sheila (Wayne); brother: Tony (Rebecca); mother-in-law: Eloise; brother-in-law: Michael; his best friend: Joe and many nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.

Robert Dean Pennington
Robert Dean Pennington, 67, of Hometown, passed away September 19, 2024, at home.
Rob is retired from Galeana Chrysler Jeep in South Carolina and a 1976 graduate of Winfield High School. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, spending time at the beach, and talking to his family and friends.
He was born June 28, 1957, to the late Emmett Grady and Dinora Virginia Cash Pennington.
He is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Mary Frances Lovejoy Pennington; children Robert Pennington of Winnsboro, SC, Nick Pennington of SC, Boyd Shamblin of SC, Dreama Dawson of Tornado, and Pauline Cantley of Hometown; brothers Bruce Pennington of St. Albans and Roger Pennington of St. Albans; sisters Opal Johnson of St. Albans and Sharon Roberts of IN; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
A tribute to the life of Robert Pennington will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 27, 2024 at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor George Webb officiating. A burial will follow in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the funeral home.

Margaret Ann Smith, 78, of Winfield, went home to be with the lord on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, after a short illness.
She was born on May 15, 1946. She was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin Hensley, and OTA May Hensley, Her Husband Gary Smith, Sister Doris Lilly, Brother Butch Hensley, Sister-in-Law Lynn Hensley and Nancy Smith, Her brother in law William Gill, Richard Smith, and Kenny Thevinen.
She is Survived by Her children Gary (Wendy) Smith Jr., Deborah (Mike) Samples, Her Grandchildren Courtney (Caleb) Turner, Jacob (Megan) Smith, Kelsey (Cameron) Hunter, Kaleigh Samples, Her brother Roger Hensley, Sister Garnett Gill.
Margaret was a graduate of Winfield High School Class of 64 and a member of Winfield Baptist Church.
Graveside funeral service was Thursday, September 19, 2024, at Lower Hodges Cemetery on Hurricane Creek Road.
Tonia Lynn Vance
Tonia L. Vance, 48, of Buffalo, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, September 16, 2024 with her sons, Caleb and Tristen by her side. She was a 1995 graduate of Buffalo High School and dedicated her life to her children.
She was preceded in death by her father Kermit Adkins and her maternal grandparents, Eldie and Helen Simpson.
Survivors include her loving mother, Faye Searls of Hurricane; children, Jacob Baer of Pt. Pleasant, Caleb Adkins of Buffalo, Haley Adkins of Kentucky and Tristen Vance of Buffalo; brother, Keith (Misty) Adkins of Leon; sister, Melissa Ruby of Scott Depot; granddaughter, Hazel Marie Baer.

Donna Kay Wilson
Donna Kay Wilson, 75 of Lakeland, FL, formerly of Red House, passed away September 15, 2024, in Lakeland Regional Hospital.
Donna was born in Charleston on August 3, 1949, to the late Houston and Gladys Thornton. She is a 1967 graduate of Poca High School and former owner of The Executive Secretary in Fredericksburg, VA. After 16 years running her business, Donna sold the business and retired to Florida with her husband in 2002.
She is also preceded in death by her daughter Kimberly Stutler Watkins, son Jeffrey Brian Stutler, and grandson J.R. Roberts.
Donna is survived by her loving husband Walter Wilson; four children Karin “Shellie” French and husband David of Red House, David Wilson and wife Ashley of IL, Chris Wilson and wife Brittany of Teays Valley, and Dawn Petry and husband Paul of Nitro; brother Roger Thornton and wife Gail of Red House; 14 grandchildren Jacob Losh, Avery Wilson, Oliva Wilson, Emery Wilson, Noah Reed, Hunter Reed, Kenzie Reed, Austen Stutler, Cody Stutler, Ashlee Heckard, Houston Heckard, Levi French, Lexi French, and Bentley Hodges; and 2 great grandchildren.

Darrell Young
Darrell Ray Young, 78, of Hurricane, passed away Friday, September 20, 2024; born May 29, 1946, to the late James (Doc) and Elsie Young.
Darrell was a lifelong resident of the area and a successful businessman and longtime farmer. He was also a member of Adda Baptist Church.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents and 3 siblings, David (Ruth) Young, Patty Wilcoxen and an infant baby.
Darrell is survived by his wife Mary Ann and their children Christie Carlson (Jason), Darrell Ray Young II, Jason Young and Andrea Campbell (Dustin). Grandchildren: Aiden, Kinlee, Makensie, Makayla, Savanna, Jocelyn (JJ), Chance and Silas.
Darrell also leaves behind a brother C. Dale Young (Joyce) and sister June Thompson.
Funeral service was Thursday, September 26, 2024, at Allen Funeral Home with Paul Tuemler officiating.
Freeda Mae Young
Freeda Mae Goddard Young, 93, of Buffalo, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, September 16, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. She was a lifelong homemaker and the mother of 5 children. Freeda was a 1949 graduate of Buffalo High School. She married the love of her life Harland Blair Young on June 21, 1949. They were married for 58 years when Blair passed away in 2007. During her younger years she started by teaching at the White Star one room school house.
She was an active member of Otter Branch United Methodist Church for several years, teaching Sunday School classes and being President of the Ladies Aide. She later attended Shiloah Baptist Church and was currently attending Eleanor Baptist Church. She was a member of the Buffalo Senior Citizens where she taught classes and helped with quilting quilts and was also a member of the Buffalo Historical Society. She was a creative cake decorator and created specialty cakes for all family members as long as she was able. She loved to cook and enjoyed cooking family meals. Freeda was a great seamstress and used her talent to construct clothes for many friends, she even made both of her daughter’s wedding dresses and dresses for the whole wedding party. Even making suits for her sons. Above all, Freeda was a devout Christian believing so in the power of prayer. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother of five children, grandmother to 12 grandchildren and great-grandmother to 11 great-grandchildren.
Born August 30, 1931, to the late Lawrence and Leona Martin Goddard, she is the last surviving member of their immediate family. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was proceeded in death by a granddaughter, Amanda Young Keefer Peterson, and three brothers, Dennis, Alvin and Paul Goddard.
Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Keefer (Warren) of Charleston, Barbara Whittington (Glenn) of Buffalo; sons, Philip (Susie), Stephen (Faye) of Buffalo and Joseph (Kim) of LaCrosse, Virginia; grandchildren, Melissa Thornhill, Sarah Johnston, Benjamin Whittington, Rachel Elswick, Heather Young, Christopher Young, Stephen Young, Meghan Roberson and Morgan Uribe; step grandchildren, Ryan Tanner and Laura Clark; great grandchildren; Reese Thornhill, Ashton Thornhill, Elizabeth Whittington, Claire Whittington, Harlan Young, Cy Hodge, Cadence Young, Althea Young, and Dorothy Elswick; step great grandchildren, Carlynn Clark and Paisley Clark.
Funeral service was Friday, September 20, 2024, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor David Panaro Jr. and Pastor Paul Browning officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park, Buffalo.
