The supplies pictured above were dropped off at the Hurricane fire station last Thursday by members of the community.
The City of Hurricane is taking donations for those affected by Hurricane Helene and sending items directly to a community in need.
Mayor Scott Edwards recently spoke to a mayor of a small town in North Carolina, and was told that they were in need of sleeping bags, blankets and inflatable mattresses for displaced residents, volunteers, electrical crews, and other workers. This particular town currently has no water and sewer, and it will take four to six weeks to restore electrical power.
Other needed items include bug spray, C and D batteries, water, healthy beverages, ready-to-eat meals, snacks, non-perishable foods, toiletries, sanitation kits, feminine hygiene products, pet food, diapers, formula, baby wipes, clothes, underwear, socks, shoes, heavy duty gloves, disposable gloves, small propane tanks, small grills, tools, fans, battery pack cell phone chargers, mud boots in all sizes, bleach, spray bottles, wipes, trash bags, dehumidifiers, shovels, brooms, flashlights, batteries, and coolers.
Donations are accepted Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hurricane Fire Department, located on Midland Trail near Hurricane Middle School.
Lakeside Elementary School has challenged area elementary schools to host food and supply drives to help out the people of North Carolina. Schools participating in the Kids Helping Kids Challenge include Lakeside Elementary, Winfield Elementary, George Washington Elementary, and Hite-Saunders Elementary School in Cabell County.
The New Hope Community Center of Richwood, West Virginia, donated $1,000 to the City of Hurricane to be used for flood relief efforts. Eight years ago, Hurricane sent sixteen employees to help restore water and sewer systems to Richwood after the flooding in 2016.
Many local businesses and churches throughout Putnam County are hosting supply drives or other relief efforts to help out those affected by Hurricane Helene.
