Tracking Dog Makes for Bow Hunting Trophy

Michael Sowards (left) poses with his trophy buck and Jesse Truman of Blue Dog Recovery

With bow hunting opening on the last Saturday in September, archers have the opportunity to bag a big one before the buck firearms season begins on the Monday before Thanksgiving. Michael Sowards of Hurricane did exactly that this last weekend when he brought home a 14-point trophy buck.

Bow hunting is relatively new to Sowards who has hunted deer with fire arms since childhood. This buck is his second bow season success and first which qualified as a true trophy.

It was a prize which almost did not happen. Michael’s shot was right on target but the large animal was able to recover and make an escape. When it became apparent that he needed tracking help, he contacted Jesse Truman of Blue Dog Game Recovery & Outfitters. Truman, located in Big Chimney in Kanawha County, made his way to Hurricane and his tracking dog did what dogs do. Truman’s dog has made bragging rights possible.
