Cornhole players compete against each other at the Hometown Hootenanny.
Visitors to the Hometown Senior Center had a good time at the Hometown Hootenanny, which was held last Saturday, October 12. This fun event, which serves as a fundraiser for the center, featured a cornhole tournament, a cake walk, hot dog and bake sale, yard sale, handmade crafts by seniors, petting zoo by Double K Farms of Hurricane, face painting, and a raffle featuring gift baskets and other prizes donated by local businesses.
The Hometown Senior Center uses fundraisers like these to raise money for activities and trips. In May, the center sent a group of seniors to the Robert W. Jackson Senior Conference, which was held at Cedar Lakes. Last year, Hometown seniors went to Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio. Previous fundraisers include a hot dog sale and a spaghetti dinner.
“We provide meals and activities for seniors at the center as well as home delivered meals for 150 people from Buffalo to Nitro, Winfield to Teays Valley,” stated Cindy Bright, site director.
Earlier this year, Hometown Senior Center began experiencing electrical difficulties. The 2024 Senior Prom was originally scheduled to be held at the center, but it had to be moved because of these issues. The County Commission recently fixed the problem, which allowed the Hometown Senior Center to hold their annual Hootenanny event.
