Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards addresses the large contingent of veterans who gathered at the commons at Hurricane High School on Monday, November 11th.
Hurricane’s Veterans Appreciation Dinner became an annual event six years ago. The event is much more than a free mail for those who have served in the United States Military. It is a time in which veterans can gather, enjoy comradeship, and be honored.
On Monday, November 11, Putnam County Bank, City of Hurricane, Hurricane High School, Scout Troop 236, Troop 36, Cub Pack 236, L&R BBQ, American Legion & VFW, Mark Burdette & Andrew Bernard (bagpipes), the Hurricane High School Cheerleaders, the HHS Future Leaders all teamed to make this year’s event extra special.
Veterans were greeted by Cub Pack 236 members who presented them which a flag pen and custom-made card bearing a “Thank You” for your service. The opening ceremony consisted of bagpipers, presentation of the Colors, Flag Salute, an address by Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards and prayer. Boy Scout Troop 36 conducted a flag retirement ceremony in which tattered remnants of Old Glory were respectfully burned.
Veterans enjoyed barbecue with a choice of chicken or pork, supplemented with a variety of beans and mashed potatoes. The dinner doubled as a reunion for many with some vets conversing with friends whom they do not regularly see.
