The Christmas Lights Are On at Valley Park

The enormous Christmas tree at Valley Park features a light display with a variety of patterns and colors.

Christmas came early to Valley Park this past Friday, December 6, with festive fun for all ages and a visit from Santa Claus. Visitors to the park enjoyed walking amongst over seventy lighted trees sponsored by local businesses and taking photos of the colorful light displays. The Hurricane Civic Chorus performed Christmas carols in front of the conference center, while an ugly sweater contest took place elsewhere on the grounds.

The enormous Christmas tree in the yard was lit up for the first time this year in an official ceremony conducted by the Putnam County Parks administration. The lights on the tree cycle through various patterns and colors, creating an ever-changing dynamic display.

After the tree lighting, Santa Claus arrived at the conference center, where he and Mrs. Claus posed for photos with both children and adults alike. The Jingle Tales Pet Parade was held outside, with festively dressed dogs and their owners competing for prizes.

In addition to offering fun festivities for the community, Putnam Parks has placed a greater emphasis upon fundraising in recent years. Local businesses can sponsor Christmas trees at Valley Park, competing against other businesses for the best decorated tree. Each year, a different local charity is chosen to benefit from these fundraisers. During Friday’s Yuletide in the Park celebration, Putnam Parks presented the Putnam County Animal Shelter with a check for $2,287.50.

Word of Light Community Church hosted a live nativity on both Friday and Saturday, in which members of the congregation portrayed the story of Jesus’ birth. In addition to the production, the church also provided a petting zoo with farm animals and gave out hot chocolate to warm up frosty spectators.

Other activities on Friday evening included crafts for children inside the conference center, and horse-drawn carriage rides around the park.

The Santa’s Helpers Christmas PJ Children’s Pageant was held on Saturday.

Upcoming events at Valley Park include the Merry and Bright Bonfire this Friday, December 13, at 6 p.m., and an Ugly Sweater Making Party on Tuesday, December 7, from 6 to 8 p.m.
