The Hurricane High Cheerleaders won the Class AAAA State Championship at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center in December.
The Hurricane City Council meeting of March 3 was recognition time for the Hurricane High School Cheerleading team. The Hurricane Cheerleaders won the Class AAAA State Championship at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center in December in competition against seven other Class AAAA teams.
The team competed for national honors in Orlando, Florida, in February and registered an 8th place finish. States team members are: Seniors-Carly Dingess(MSAC Cheerleader of the year), Owen Woodburn (1st team all-conference), Autiana Hollins, Haley Vedral; Juniors- Faith Taylor (honorable mention all-conference), Kaylee Eldridge, Kennedy Warner, Bella Whittington, Ava Ison, Jenna Simms; Sophomores- Amyah Persinger (2nd team all-conference), Kendra Rainey, Ella Humbertson, Kinley Pritt, Cassidy Davis; and Freshman- Nelle Beckman, Zella Cooper.
Council also recognized city workers Joseph Hicks and Daniel Payne with certificates of recognition for their rescue of a woman who was trapped in her automobile in the flood waters of Tacketts Branch on February 6th.
City manager Andy Skidmore informed council that construction of 470 housing units on the Woodworth Farm will begin in September. Skidmore said the property would be closed upon in March. Infrastructure construction will begin in April and is slated for completion before the start of home construction.
Police Chief Mike Mullins reported that HPD made a total of 64 arrests with 46 charged to the State and 18 to the City during February. Officers also recovered four firearms and seized 171 grams of marijuana, 16.1 grams of Meth, 102 grams of shrooms, 4.7 grams of cocaine and 60 Xanax bars during the month.
Council held the second reading of an annexation which will bring 1.68 acres on Teays Valley Road into city limits. The property is just east of Chapman Funeral Home and is slated to be the future home to a Putnam County Bank Branch.
The next regular Hurricane Council meeting will be Monday, April 7, at 6:30 p.m.
