ROSALEE BOWLING
Rosalee Bowling, 96, of Red House, passed peacefully away on Monday, March 3, 2025 at Hubbard Hospice House West in South Charleston.
Rosalee was a member of Paradise Bible Church. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, sewing, canning, baking and spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved reading the word of God.
She is preceded in death by her husband Howard “Woody” Bowling, daughter Barbara Hatfield, son Timmy Bowling, and son-in-law DeWane Dotson. She is survived by daughters Judy Dotson, Diana and husband Mike Criner, son Woody Jr. and wife Ann Bowling, son-in-law Kenneth Hatfield, 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and 1 on the way, and many nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends.
A tribute to the life of Rosalee Bowling was held Friday, March 7, 2025, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in New Antioch Cemetery.
DALE HOITT BROWN
Dale Hoitt Brown, 80, of Scott Depot, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2025.
He was born December 27, 1944 in Montgomery to the late Ralph and Goldie (Gwinn) Brown.
Dale was a hard worker his entire life and a jack-of-all-trades, primarily in the commercial construction field. He was the owner of 3T Corporation, a residential development company in Scott Depot. He was also a member of the Carpenters Local Union for over 35 years, working as Project & Construction Manager having skills in all areas of construction and proud of the projects he worked on in the tristate area.
Dale touched the lives of everyone that knew him. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Together Dale and his wife Nancy built a loving home full of laughter, warmth, and unwavering support for one another. He was a steady presence in the lives of his children and grandchildren. His legacy will live on through his family, who were always the center of his world. He made everyone around him feel valued and important, and his infectious sense of humor brightened even the darkest of days to so many that knew him. He represented the epitome of a man and role model. His lessons extended beyond words, often in his craftsmanship and his ability to teach others.
Dale is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Nancy Eads Brown; daughters: Tracy Renee Farmer (departed J.C. Farmer) of Scott Depot, WV, Tamera Lynn Brown-Legg (Chris) of Hurricane, WV, Tiffany Marie Brown-Buettner of Greensboro, NC, and Tara Dale Simpkins (James) of Hometown, WV; grandchildren: Megan, Josh, and Emma Farmer, Michael Todd Lovejoy II, Tabitha Weddington, Corbin, Colin Dale, Chloe Buettner, and Dakota Simpkins; 6 great grandchildren; brother, Darrell Brown; and his sister, Doris Mitchell.
Graveside service was Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at Montgomery Memorial Park, London, WV.
DENNIS ‘CHUCK’ CASTO
Dennis “Chuck” Casto, 61, of Manilla Ridge, Leon, passed away Sunday March 2, 2025 at Thomas Memorial Hospital. He was a 1981 graduate of Buffalo High School. He worked for over 20 years at the Terramite Corporation and recently worked as a contractor for Toyota Manufacturing with Resource.
Born June 26, 1963, he was the son of the late Arliff D. “Jack” Casto and Marilyn Warner Casto.
Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years Teresa Casto; sons, Matt (Shoneta) Casto, Mark (Debby) Casto, Derek Casto; daughter, Destiny Casto; brother, Dwane Casto all of Manilla Ridge; sisters, Denise Casto of Hartford and Lorie (Randy) Roe of New Haven; grandson, Hunter. He is also survived by several step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, extended family and friends.
Funeral service was Friday, March 7, 2025 at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Rick Legg officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Given.
DENVIL LEE HANDLEY
Denvil Lee Handley, 93, of Nitro, passed away on February 26, 2025.
He was born on September 17, 1931 to the late Harry and Virginia (McCallister) Handley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Handley; son, Randy Handley; great-grandson, Wesley Craig; brothers: Jack and Dick Handley.
Denvil was a proud Army Veteran having received many medals, including a Bronze Star for his service. He was also a member of the Appalachian Fiddlers.
He is survived by his grandchildren: Heather Patton (Matt Hall), Jamie Harper (Joey), Kristen Thornton (Justin Shelton) and Amber Bird (Justin); great grandchildren: Caleb Shamblin, Jaidyn Patton, Jordon Patton, Chelsey Craig, Charles “Bub” Craig Jr., Chloe Craig, Caden Craig, Emily Call, Hayley Call, Logan Call, Olivia Call, Coltin Johnson, Aubreigh Bird, Hunter Bird; great-great grandchildren: Paisley Shamblin, Kenzie Taylor, and Draven Holt, nephew, Richie Handley (Beth), sisters: Sue Cassidy and Joyce Hayes.
Funeral Service for Denvil was Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Chaplain Pete Thompson officiating. Burial with Military Honors was in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane.
Joann Miller
Joann Miller, 84, of Hurricane, passed away on March 6, 2025.
She was born on October 22, 1940 in Charleston to the late Jasper and Ruth (King) Weaver. In addition to her parents, Joann was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Gerald Ray Miller; and sister, Jane Weaver.
Joann was retired from Union Carbide where she worked as a chemist for 38 years.
She is survived by her sons: Matthew and Patrick Miller, both of Hurricane; grandchildren: Ethan and Allison Miller; and sister, Judith Weaver.
Graveside service for Joann was Wednesday March 12, 2025 at Boggess Family Cemetery, Goldtown.
Lillian Frances Miller
It is with great sadness that we tell you our sweet mother, Lillian Sarver Miller, 96, of Hurricane, peacefully passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2025, just eight days shy of her 97th birthday, surrounded by her loving and dedicated caregivers, after a nine year struggle with Dementia.
Lillian was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Richard “Dick” Miller; her parents, Herschel and Edythe Meadows Sarver of Bluefield; brothers: Vernon T. Sarver of Pensacola, FL and Edwin H. Sarver of Bluefield; and nephews: Edwin Sarver of Greenville, SC and Vernon Sarver Jr. of Pensacola, FL.
Lillian leaves behind her two children: Edie Miller Davis (Jeff) and Rick Miller (Tiffany) all of Hurricane; grandchildren: Ashley Davis Reed (Mark) of Winfield, Katie Davis Perperas (Nick) of Bridgeport, Lindsay Davis Johnson (Bobby) of Hurricane, Nick Miller (Andrea) of Cool Ridge, WV, Corey Miller (Amanda) of Mount Hope, WV, Sarah Miller Haye (Daniel) of Mt. Hope, and Kaylee Miller Zagst (Cory) of Hurricane; 10 great grandchildren; as well as eight nieces and nephews.
Lillian worked as a church secretary in her early married years, worked for WCAW Radio for 5 years, then CAMC General in the Billing Department for 25 years. In retirement years, Lillian and Dick worked for Ronald McDonald House in Charleston for 7 years. Lillian didn’t know a stranger and had many friends of all ages, she was an avid Bridge player, loved her family, her church, and ice cream. Lillian was the ultimate hostess, no meal was without a proper plate and napkin never a fork out of place. She couldn’t feed you enough. Even in the nursing home, she was always offering cookies to other patients, she enjoyed life and entertaining her family and friends. She lived a wonderful and full life.
Funeral service for Lillian was Thursday, March 6, 2025 at St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot, with Rev. Teresa Markins officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery, Princeton, with Aaron Sarver officiating.
Dennis William Rollins
Dennis W. Rollins, 91, of Hometown, passed away Friday, March 7, 2025, at Hubbard Hospice West at Thomas Memorial Hospital. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran. Dennis was a 50-year member of the Laborers International Union and was a small business owner for many years operating the Hometown Body Shop. He was a longtime member of the Hometown Apostolic Church.
Born December 11, 1933, in Red House, he was the son of the late James M. Rollins and Gracie M. Beller Rollins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Frances Rollins; sons, Carl V. Rollins and Gary Scott Rollins Sr.; sisters, Betty Scott and Kathryn Rollins; brothers, Denver Rollins and Vernon “Dencil” Rollins.
Survivors include his daughters, Lora (Keith) Turner of Chesapeake OH and Chrissie Rollins of Winfield; sister Louise Davis of Poca; grandchildren Scott Rollins Jr., April Rollins Montgomery (Jesse), Kelly Donahue, Alyssa Rollins and Bryson Barnet and Aubree Nash; great-grandchildren, Ella Donahue, Owen Montgomery, Vincent Montgomery and Braylynn Meade. Dennis is also survived by several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Funeral service was Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Hometown Apostolic Church, Hometown, with Pastor William Carter and Pastor Joel Sites officiating. Burial was in Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar.
Marvin ‘Marty’ Rucker
Marvin “Marty” Rodney Rucker, age 70, of Nitro, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 10, 2025, after an extended illness. He was born March 22, 1954, in Lincoln County to the late Jettie and Eloise Rucker.
Marty was renowned for his selflessness and generosity. His profound compassion and unwavering patience touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He was always willing to make personal sacrifices for the well-being of others.
For 40 years, Marty owned and operated Rucker’s Body Shop in Poca. His skill and artistry in automotive painting and auto body collision repair earned him the reputation of Best Body Man in the area.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents, Jettie and Eloise Rucker.
He is survived by his wife, Melissa Rucker; sons, Rodney (Carrie) Rucker, Robert (Jessica) Rucker, Billy (Lyndsey) Meddings, Alex (Whitney) Meddings, Zack Meddings; and grandchildren Brogan Rucker, Chet Rucker, William Triplett, Madeline Triplett, and Zeek Meddings. He is also survived by siblings Larry Rucker, Bonnie Stickdorn, Debbie McGrew, Teresa Reid and David Rucker.
At his request there will be no services.
Robert ‘Bob’ D. Terry
Robert D. “Bob” Terry, born November 4, 1955, passed away on March 4, 2025 peacefully at home in Winfield. Bob was the son of Ralph D. “Starkey” and Virginia L. Leadmon Terry.
Bob worked as a Serviceman for Mountaineer Gas Company with 38 years of service.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death his sisters: Marion “Mat” Randolph and Elva “Sis” Terry; brother’s in-law: Garland “Peanut” Hayes and Bernard “Bernie” Smith.
Bob is survived by his wife of 48 years: Gayla Williamson Terry; daughter and son in-law: Allison and Dathan Holley; grandchildren: Brock and Darbe Holley; sisters: Lucy Hartley, Ruby Hayes, Grace Terry and Maxine Smith; brother in-law, Stanley Randolph; nephews and niece: Chris (Joy) Randolph, David Meadows, Brian Hartley and Amber (Kyle) Catlin; great nieces and nephew: Paige (Bobby) Catlin, JW Catlin and Hope Hartley.
Bob was Allison’s biggest fan, he was the greatest Cheer, Softball and Volleyball Dad, even when she was coaching.
Funeral service for Bob was March 9, 2025 at Chapman Funeral Home, Winfield, with Rev. Charlie Mays officiating. Burial was in Winfield Cemetery Winfield.
Norman Ivan Young
Norman Ivan Young, 85, of Buffalo, West Virginia, passed away quietly at home on March 8, 2025.
Born on August 29, 1939, Norman grew up in Fraziers Bottom, WV in a house with no indoor plumbing, running water or electricity. A dedicated family man, he married the love of his life, Krystal Lee (Skinner), on August 3, 1960, whom he met at age 15 when he swam across the Kanawha River to meet her. Together they built a life centered around hard work, community, and family.
After graduating from Winfield High School, Norman served as an ambulance driver and medic in the US army while stationed in Korea in the late 1950s. Following his military service, he held positions at Bordon Dairy in Columbus OH, Shippers Car Line in Eleanor and People’s Life Insurance. He was Postmaster of Buffalo from 1965 to 1978. He was a small business owner and a dedicated farmer, raising cattle, tobacco, fresh produce and Haflinger horses. At one time, he was the largest grower of sweetcorn in the state of WV and hired many local young people to pick corn, work in tobacco and do other jobs in this large-scale operation at Buffalo.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Geraldine Young, and his brother Jerry Young.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Krystal Young; his children, Michael Norman Young of Fraziers Bottom, Gregory Leon Young and his wife Jennifer, Tamra Kaye Rogers and her husband, PJ Rogers all of Buffalo; and his sister, Darlene Geyer and her husband Phil Geyer of Winfield. He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Benjamin Young, Audrey and Samuel Rogers, and Ruth and Rachel Young.
He will be laid to rest at Mt. Union church in Pliny where he and Krystal had their first official date.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday March 15, 2025 at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo with Rev. Mark Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Bowcott Cemetery at Mt. Union Church.
