Gerry Stover issues safety instructions to members of Troop 236 and Troop 36 prior to embarking on a clean up project to benefit Meeks Mountain Trail users.
Troop 236 and Troop 36 gathered at the lot on the banks of Mill Creek opposite Hurricane City Park on Monday, March 17th, to clean up the former site of a storage building on Meeks property. The Meeks Family has made the lot available for parking specificly for Meeks Mountain Trail users. Completion of the cleanup project and follow up documentation will result in receiving the Conservation Good Turn Award.
Since 1910, conservation has been an integral part of the program of Scouting America. Scouting America has been a positive force in conservation and environmental efforts. Scouts have rendered distinguished public service by helping to conserve wildlife, energy, forests, soil, and water. Past generations of Scouts have been widely recognized for undertaking conservation Good Turn action projects in their local communities. In addition to the Conservation Good Turn patch, the Scouts will receive the “Order of the Firefly,” a recognition patch that Stover plans to award in his capacity as the Ecology Director (official approval on this patch is expected). It will be awarded to Scouts who have done a good deed as it relates to conservation. Criteria include knowledge of awards for Conservation, Outdoor Ethics, Leave No Trace principles, and Outdoor Code in conjunction with a plan and execution of a community conservation project.
