Disc Golf Tournament Brings Visitors to County

More than five thousand dollars in prize money was on the line for the professionals competing at Bridge Park.

The City of Hurricane was the scene of the Discraft Presents: Putting the Pieces Together Powered by Martin’s Peterbilt and the City of Hurricane disc golf tournament on Saturday, April 12th.

The professionals teed off at the Bridge Park course while the amateurs utilized the Valley Park course. The event was a PDGA B-Tier Event with 148 total participants including 35 pros from 7 states and Canada. PDGA B-Tier events are limited to PDGA members and must be at least 36 holes. The total payout must be at least 100% of entry fees plus an additional $750 minimum. The pro payout for the event was $5,628.

Despite the fact that a disc is not a ball and an elevated metal basket is not a hole, disc golf shares terminology with golf and is scored in like manner. Par for the 18 holes at Bridge Park is 59. The top finishing pro was Corey Ellis of Barboursville with a 36 hole 15 under par and $950 winnings. Ellis, 2023 Euro Open Champion, beat second pl;ace finisher Nate Hecker of Bellefontaine, OH, by one stroke. Hecker won $640 for his efforts. Top female finisher was Brook Johnson of White Sulphur Springs. Her 17 over par finish earned her $156. Trevor Harbolt of Elizabethtown, KY, won first place money of $580 in the MP40 competition. First place finisher in the MP50 division Billy Ray Osborne of Franklin, OH, won $400.

Amateur winners were: MA1 – Johnny Shaffer of Morgantown, FA1 – Michaela Moore of Glenville, MA40 – Jared Fredeking of Huntington, MA60 – Michael Corica of Eleanor, MA70 – John Weber of Huntington, MA2 – Austin Mullins of Culloden, FA2 – Kattie Lilly of Charleston, MA3 – Chris Fulks of Huntington, FA3 – Codi Dickerson of Charleston, MA4 – Bryson Hall of West Portsmouth, OH, and MJ15 – Aaron Doerner of Hurricane.

Money was raised through the event that helps supports the mission of C.A.R.E.S. (Community Autism Resources and Education Systems).
