JOHN WILLARD BROGAN, JR.
John Willard Brogan, Jr., 84, from Rutland, OH, passed away in Lakeland, FL on May 1, 2025. Born in Loudendale, WV, to John and Wilda Brogan (Greene).
Survived by Teresa Valdez (Daniel) of Richwood, TX and John Brogan of Rutland, OH. Three grandchildren, Lex Barker, Stephanie Skelton, Michelle Brogan and living siblings, Joan Goff (Frank), Donald King (Eileen), Larry Brogan (Diane), Judy Collier, and Mark Brogan (Barbara).
Visitation is Thursday, May 15, 2025, 9:00-11:00 am followed by Memorial service at 11:00 am at Rutland Civic Center, 337 Main St, Rutland, OH 45775.
RONALD H. BROWN
Rev. Ronald H. Brown, 78, of Fraziers Bottom, went Home to be with the Lord on April 30, 2025 at Rivers Health in Pt. Pleasant.
He was born on April 10, 1947, to the late Dana and Goldie Brown in Chelyan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra; and his siblings: Dana Brown Jr., Kay Carte and Brenda Welch.
Ronald was a beloved Pastor of many local churches over the years including: Bethany Baptist Church, Valley View Freewill Baptist Church, Five & Twenty United Baptist Church, Sousanna Freewill Baptist Church and Mt. Union Church, as well as many more during his more than 40 years of dedicated service to Christ. He proudly served his country with 16 years of service to the WV Army National Guard and the WV Air National Guard, was retired from AEP John Amos Power Plant with 40 years of service, and was a member and Past Master of Nitro Lodge No 170 A.F. & A.M..
He is survived by his daughters: Traci (Rev. Jonathan) Smith of Fraziers Bottom, and Erica (Rex) Justis of Patriot, OH; grandchildren: Christian Leffingwell, Aden Leffingwell, Jonathan (Baylee) Smith Jr., and Elena (Michael) Joyce; great grandchildren: Jonah Smith and Cordelia Joyce; and many nieces and nephews, as well as many brothers and sisters in Christ.
Funeral service for Rev. Brown was Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Chapman Funeral Home with son in-law Rev. Jonathan Smith officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park Milton, with Rev. Doug Doss officiating the committal.
BRIAN KEITH CHUMBLEY
With heavy hearts, we are announcing the unfortunate passing of Brian Keith Chumbley, 58, of Hurricane. Brian passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2025, surrounded by loved ones after a courageous fight of over 10 years to cancer. His fight was a light to others and unwavering in his determination and tenacity. Brian continuously defied the odds of science and medicine for over 10 years. Brian’s trailblazer attitude paved the way for others to have the strength and purpose in life. A devoted father, Air Force veteran, hardworking member of his community, and member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane, Brian, will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Born on February 8, 1967, in Radford VA, to David and Iris Chumbley, Brian graduated from Bluefield High School Class of 1985. Brian proudly served his country as an Aerospace Ground Equipment Specialist of the United States Air Force between 1987 – 1990. His time in the service instilled in him a deep sense of discipline, pride, and dedication-values he carried with him throughout his life. In 1990, he met and married his wife of 34 years, Donna Loveday in Jefferson City, TN, where they raised their children.
Following his military service, Brian drove countless hours for Old Dominion Trucking Company of White Pine, TN. Brian later graduated from Walter State Community and Technical College with a degree in Electrical Studies. In 2008, he relocated to West Virginia where he began a long and honorable career at the John Amos Power Plant in Winfield. There, he was known for his strong work ethic, dependability, and camaraderie with his coworkers. He took great pride in his role and the contributions he made to keeping homes and communities powered.
Outside of work, Brian was a devoted family man. He enjoyed working with his hands, building projects, and spending time outdoors. He was always happiest when surrounded by his family and friends. His humor, quiet strength, and unwavering support will be remembered and cherished.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; his children: Tinsley Jarel, Zack (Rachel) and Kadeon; parents: Iris and David Chumbley; a brother, Dr. Kelly Chumbley (Tracy); grandson, Caden Chumbley; niece and nephew: Kaleigh, Christian (Perry Kate) and Gabi Loveday; uncle, Richard Chumbley (Faith); brother-in-law, Rusty Loveday (Sharon); special friends: John Casto, Dave Shortridge, Bill Fizer, Emily Black; and a host of extended family and friends who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. George Chumbley and Mr. and Mrs. Tony Goad.
A Celebration of Brian’s Life was held Wednesday May 7, 2025 at First Baptist Church of Hurricane with Rev. Dr. Jeff Davenport officiating.
Michael W. Combs
Michael W. Combs, 66, of Eleanor, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2025 at his home. He attended Buffalo High School until his family temporarily relocated to Florida where he was a 1976 graduate of Fort Pierce Central High School. Mike was a retired member of the Laborers Union Local 1353.
Mike spent his retirement between his home restoring antiques and repairing anything that needed repairing, and his getaway on the Greenbrier River fishing and repairing anything that needed repairing. It was always said that if Mike can’t fix it, it can’t be fixed.
He was born July 19, 1958, in Charleston and was the son of Adonna Combs of Buffalo and the late Ernest W. Combs Jr. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Ann Combs; son, Jason Daniel Combs and his brother, Rickey Allen Combs.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Cheyne (Katie) Combs of Morgantown; brothers, Todd (Andrea) Combs and Skip (Cora) Combs. Mike is also survived by nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
There are no services planned at this time and a memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
Deanna Lynn Hartman
Deanna Lynn “Big D.” Hartman 69, of Hurricane, passed away on May 3, 2025 at Select Specialty Hospital in Charleston.
She was born to the late Bill and Doris J. Johnson Browning on May 15, 1955.
Deanna was no stranger to helping people and neighbors, giving a helping hand, meal or whatever she could do. She attended area Church of God’s and enjoyed singing as well as dancing too.
She is survived by her daughters: Sasha Weaver of Hurricane and Sharla Browning of Cross Lanes; her grandchildren: Zechariah Davis, Caleb Davis, Storm Davis, Winter Clark, Shelby Davis and Ray Davis; 12 great grandchildren; siblings: Bill (Karen) Browning of Hurricane, Angela Browning Woodall of Scot Depot, Susanne (Chum) Browning Null of Cross Lanes; half-brother: Glenn Butcher of Circleville, OH; and the father of her children: Michael Weaver.
Funeral Service for Deanna will be 1:00pm Saturday, May 10, 2025, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Pastor Larry Hammett officiating. Burial was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Hurricane.
Tony Kevin Knight
Tony Kevin Knight, 64, of Scott Depot, unexpectedly went home to be with the Lord on April 29, 2025. He was born on May 12, 1960, in Man, WV, to the late Sam and Violet Knight of Davin, WV.
You could take the boy out of Logan County, but you could never take the Logan County out of Tony. He carried his roots with him everywhere he went—with pride, humor, and heart.
Tony was a graduate of Marshall University and bled green and white—GO HERD! A true people person, Tony loved all things social. He found joy in bowling, golfing, working on projects, cooking, grilling, and cheering on his beloved son at soccer games or helping out on the field at Winfield High School.
He was the Energizer Bunny of the family—always on the go, always involved.
Tony was a man with a larger-than-life personality and an even bigger heart. He never met a stranger and would help anyone in need without hesitation. Whether he was perfecting a new recipe or lighting up the backyard with a good cigar and conversation, he made everyday moments special.
Tony is survived by the love of his life, Susan Marion Knight; his children: Rachel Smith, Rebecca Mayle (Andrew), and his son, Trowa Knight. He was a proud and devoted “Poppa” to his precious grandchildren: Piper Gambrell, Everly Cline, Xavier Mullins, Brody Mayle, and Callum Mayle. He also leaves behind his beloved sisters, Belinda Brady (Tucker) and Tish Cline (Freddie), as well as a host of cherished nieces, nephews, and friends.
Let’s not forget his two spoiled Golden Girls—Princess and Mimzie—who were never far from his side.

Philip Stanley Severin
Philip Stanley Severin, 65 of Red House, formerly of Nebraska, passed away May 2, 2025.
Philip was born July 7, 1959, in Omaha, Nebraska, to the late Stanley and Chloy Severin. He is also a retired contractor.
He is survived by his four children, Lenette, Tabatha, Amber, and Matthew; brother Wayne; sister Julie; and a host of grandchildren.
Services will be held in Nebraska.
Roy T. Woods
Roy T. Woods, 92, of Hilltop Lakes, Texas, passed away April 29, 2025, after a brief cancer diagnosis. He was born in Hurricane on June 12, 1932.
Roy was an amazing father, brother, uncle, friend, golfer, traveler, handyman, dog lover who spent the last years of his life with a very special lady Pat Mossman. He loved living on the golf course at Hilltop and could beat most players a lot younger than him. He did like to be very competitive and may have made a bet or two…
His career consisted of Air Force, Union Carbide and Hilltop Manager.
Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Ann and daughter, Deana.
He is survived by Pat, his children Gregory, Lisa and Barry (granddaughter Heather). He also loved his favorite nieces and nephews as well as his honorary grandchildren.
He loved helping others, teaching golf, teaching how to fix anything and just enjoying life.
Service was Sunday, May 4th, in Normangee, TX. He will be laid to rest in in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens following a service at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home in Poca on Saturday, May 10th.
