Cpl. Fulks Memorial Trail Race — Running and Remembering

More than one hundred 5K, 5K Ruck, and 10K runners bolt through the starting gate at Meeks Mountain Trails on Saturday, May 10th.

The Cpl. Fulks Memorial Trail Race is an annual event on the winding Meeks Mountain Trails at Hurricane City Park. The race commemorates Marine Corps Cpl. William B. Fulks who died May 18, 2006 from wounds and burns suffered while conducting combat operations in Anbar province, Iraq. The race serves as a fundraiser for the William B. Fulks Marine Corps League Detachment 1474 scholarship fund and its effort to address the needs of veterans and their families.

More than one hundred individuals participated in the 9 a.m. Saturday, May 10th event which featured 5K, 10K, and 5K Ruck races. Andrew Bailey of South Charleston was the first 5K finisher with a time of 20:36.8. Samuel Keeney of Rainelle took first in the 10K with a time of 44:30.3. The 5K Ruck winner was William Blake of Scott Depot with a time of 33:16.9.

The top male and female winners in each of the three races received trophies produced by Bear Wood Company of Hurricane. Receiving trophies were: 5K males — Andrew Bailey, Ethan Saunders, and Vincent Gibson; 5K females — Laura Bradley, Kellie Blake, and Ella Doerner; 10K males — Samuel Keeney with a time of 44:30.3, Caleb Stillwell with a time of 48:07.0, Enzo Lewis with a time of 48:20.8; 10K females — Morgan Gray, Geneve Bashon, and Nicole Michaelis; 5K Ruck males — William Blake, Adam King, and Michael Renfroe; 5K Ruck females — Chelsea King and Amy Riffee.
