Emerald Elegance’s “The Giving Tree” featured artistically choreographed dancing and emotional performances.
Winfield High School General Admission and Emerald Elegance Show Choirs made their debut performance this past Sunday, January 11, with two dynamic shows inspired by beloved children’s books and televisions series.
Emerald Elegance, Winfield’s all-girl choir, performed a musical rendition of “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein. This classic children’s book tells the story of the friendship between an apple tree and a boy. The tree loves the boy and gives him her apples to make him happy. However, as the boy grows into a man, he becomes more demanding of the tree, and she willingly sacrifices her wood so that he can construct things which he feels will bring him happiness. The stage backdrop for Emerald Elegance’s show featured a stylistic tree with branches that could be removed as the story progressed.
Emerald Elegance was formed four years ago, and the freshmen who became involved with the group when it first started will be graduating this spring. The first graduating seniors from Emerald Elegance were honored at the debut performance on Sunday.
General Admission’s performance show, “Let’s Watch TV,” was an ode to popular television series from the past, as well as shows from today. The majority of the cast dressed in cozy leisurewear to invoke a feeling of relaxing in front of the television set, while other performers dressed as various characters which represented the featured series. A large television backdrop revealed the name of each series which was chosen for the show, which included The Flintstones, Scooby Doo, Popeye, Trolls, The Muppet Show, Brady Bunch, I Dream of Jeanie, Family Matters, Beverly Hillbillies, Andy Griffith, Gilligan’s Island, I Love Lucy, and Wonder Woman. General Admission did more than just sing and dance; their routine required Muppet puppets to come to life.
Winfield Show Choirs are directed by Kelsey Tolley Baldwin. Green Machine, the performance band, is directed by Jamie Atkins. There are eighty-four students involved in the whole program.
General Admission and Emerald Elegance will be competing at Nitro High School this weekend.
