Putnam Math Field Day Winners to Compete in Regional at Marshall

Tuesday, February 2, was Math Field Day 2026 for all of Putnam County’s high schools. For Hurricane and Winfield, it was an extra special day as the two schools produced nine of the top ten finishers in Grade 10-12 competition. The competition, held at Toyota in Buffalo, also produced three 9th-grade top performers. The highest finishers will compete for Region 2 honors in regional competition to be held at Marshall University on Friday, February 27, where Putnam County will compete against the best from Cabell, Logan, Lincoln, Mingo, and Mason.

The following Grade 10-12 and Grade 9 finishers will represent Putnam County:

Grades 10-12 — Erin Walls (WHS), Paxton Haddox (HHS), Dylan Winarta (WHS), Robby Kyer (HHS), Jaxson Davis (PHS), Connor Westfall (HHS), Nick VonWulfen (WHS), Landon Stonestreet (HHS), Bear Fuller (HHS), and Nicholas Winarta (WHS); Grade 9 — Blaise Liu (HHS), Cruz Berry (WHS), and Elijah Woods (BHS).

Grade 10-12 alternates are: 1st alternate: Larson Barkey (WHS), and 2nd alternate: Owen Good (Calvary Baptist). Grade 9 1st alternate is Rylie Himstedt (WHS).

In Putnam County Math Field Day competition students showcased their problem‑solving skills, teamwork, and determination. The overall team rankings were: Hurricane – 1st, Winfield – 2nd, Poca – 3rd, Buffalo – 4th, Teays Valley Christian – 5th, and Calvary Baptist – 6th.

Individual Top Performers in Grade 10-12 (from 1st to 10th) were: Erin Walls, Paxton Haddox, Dylan Winarta, Robby Kyer, Jaxson Davis , Connor Westfall, Nick VonWulfen, Landon Stonestreet, Bear Fuller, and Nicholas Winarta. Grade 9 Top Performers were: Blaise Liu – 1st, Cruz Berry – 2nd, and Elijah Woods – 3rd.

Top performers in Region 2 will advance to compete in the State finale on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon.
