Getting a Headstart on Spring

Peggy Hull is pictured planting green onion seed in a homemade tunnel at her home on Hurricane Creek Road.

Mark and Peggy Hull garden every month of the year.

On Saturday, March 14, it was carrot, cabbage and green onion planting time in the cold frame tunnels which Mark fashioned from PVC piping and polyethylene film.

The Hulls expect to enjoy the fruit of Saturday’s labor before and during the first weeks of summer.

Garlic and dill plantings of last September are doing well, having survived the prolonged cold of January and February in which the daily low dropped to 20° or lower on more than thirty occasions.

Water jugs stored in the Hull’s tunnels did not freeze the ten day period between January 24th and February 2nd in which the daily high failed to reach 32º.
