The May 4 Hurricane City Council meeting was a time for commendation, recognition and congratulation. Mayor Scott Edwards read a letter from Will Dempsey, President of Wildlife & Discovery Center of WV, which cited the care displayed by two Hurricane police officers in which two special needs children were stranded at the Center in Valley Park. Officers Brent Reed and Matthew Chapman provided support to the children until the situation was resolved, a period of seven hours. Edwards stated that the officers were not obligated to remain with the children but recognized and supplied the personal attention of which the two children were in need.
Wes Davis, Catlin Hinkley and Steven Hinkley were each presented a Certificate of Recognition which reads: “In grateful recognition of your time, dedication and outstanding service to preserve the dignity and history of the cemetery behind First Baptist Church of Hurricane.” The cemetery is not owned by anyone or anyparty. It ceased to be used more than one hundred years ago and predates the James River Turnpike (Midland Trail) which was completed in 1832. The cemetery sits on the route of the Old State Road (Teays Valley Turnpike) which was established by the Commonwealth of Virginia prior to 1800.
