The dance floor at the John Henson Senior Center was filled with dancers.
Putnam Seniors enjoyed reliving their high school days during the 2026 Putnam Aging Senior Prom, which was held on Friday, May 15, at the John Henson Senor Center in Hurricane. The event featured dinner and dancing, friendship and fun.
“People like to feel young again,” said Jenni Sutherland, executive director of Putnam Aging. “Today’s seniors aren’t the same as seniors thirty years ago. They like to be more active.”
This will be the seventh year that Putnam Aging has hosted the Senior Prom. The event cycles around to the different senior centers in the county, so that each community will be represented. This year’s Prom King and Queen were David Simmons of Hurricane and Donna Ingram of Poca.
Putnam Aging operates the John Henson Senior Center, Buffalo Senior Center, and Hometown Senior Center, as well as the Winfield Senior Nutrition Site. These centers provide invaluable opportunities for older individuals to socialize with each other, make new friends, and even find romantic partners. Four couples who attended the Senior Prom met each other at local senior centers.
Putnam Aging offers a variety of events for older individuals, from daily activities at the centers to larger events such as dances and picnics, to multi-day charter bus trips to out-of-state destinations. The John Henson Center will be offering a new Drums Alive seated exercise class later this month. Participants use drumsticks to play rhythms on exercise balls, sing along to songs, and use ribbon sticks and shakers. The class helps improve memory, dexterity, movement, mood, and strength. Classes will be held every Tuesday and Friday from May 26th through July 10th at 10 a.m. at John Henson Senior Center, 2800 Putnam Avenue, Hurricane.
