James E. Marshall Post 187 Observes Memorial Day

Members of James E. Marshall Post 187 listen to the words of Marine Corps League Commandant Department of West Virginia Jim McDade.

Memorial Day was a very busy day for James E. Marshall American Legion Post #187. This year the Post conducted ceremonies at four locations.
Monday, May 25 began at the War Memorial at Winfield at 10 a.m., followed by ceremonies at Valley View Memorial Park in Hurricane at noon, at Haven of Rest in Red House at 2:30 p.m., and at Beech Grove Cemetery in Eleanor at 7:30 p.m.

The 10 a.m. ceremony at Winfield consisted of prayer, a Memorial Day address by Marine Corps League Commandant Department of West Virginia Jim McDade, a 3-shot volley, followed by the playing of Taps.

The 3-shot volley consisted of seven members of the Post 187 each firing three blank rounds. The 3-shot volley commemorates an ancient practice in which the names of the fallen were called out three times at the close of a day of battle.

Post 187 has called out the names of the fallen, faithfully and without fail, Memorial Day after Memorial Day. The Post was founded in 1999 and named in honor of 1st Lt. James E. Marshall who was killed in action in Korea in September of 1952. James E. Marshall’s name is among the names listed at the War Memorial in Winfield.

Seven rifles call out the names of the dead at the ceremony in Winfield.
