Hurricane High School senior MaKayla Young received the Cpl. William B. Fulks Scholarship at the school’s award assembly on May 19th.
The scholarship is presented annually to a graduating senior of Hurricane or Cabell Midland High Schools who meets the selective eligibility requirements set forth by MCL Detachment #1474.
The scholarship was established in support of the detachment’s mission to promote the interests of the United States Marine Corps, to honor and perpetuate the history of the United States Marine Corps, and to support the families of veterans.
The scholarship is funded by proceeds from the annual Cpl. William B. Fulks Memorial 5K/10K Run, Walk and Ruck Race.
Cpl Fulks grew up in the Ona and Milton area, was a graduate of Cabell Midland High School where he excelled in many sports and competed in the Golden Gloves Boxing Championships. Cpl. Fulks enlisted in the Marine Corps and after Boot Camp and Infantry training, was deployed to Afghanistan in 2004. Following his deployment to Afghanistan, he completed Force Reconnaissance Training and was deployed to Al Anbar, Iraq.
On May 1st 2006, his Humvee struck an IED and he received massive internal injuries and severe burns. Cpl Fulks succumbed to his injuries on May 18th 2006, just days after his 23rd birthday.
